Silly Me!

I got my Arnica gel in the mail yesterday and it couldn't have come at a better time. Last night I did the silliest thing. I was heading to bed with a glass of water, but wanted to give Jack a little hug before bed. He sleeps in the living room. It was dark and I tripped over something, couldn't stop my fall and landed hard. Glass everywhere and somehow the water shorted out a circuit and we now have no power in the living room. I was in a fog when Alex told me but he said he'll take care of it today.

Anyway, I have bruises on my bruises, my pinky finger, left wrist and big toe feel broken...though they are likely just sprained. If they still ache in a few days I'll drag myself to the emergency room...but the idea leaves me unmotivated. I don't know how it is in your neck of the woods, but here in Quebec, an emergency room visit is MINIMUM 12-14 hours wait (if you're lucky). I feel more like a fool than anything! How can someone with so much walking experience trip over something and fall so hard? 😕

But I'm happy to say the Arnica gel WORKS FAST. Wow. I wish I'd had this lovely gel a long time ago! Thanks again to everyone who recommended it, it's FABULOUS!

Since I can barely hobble, the dogs didn't get their walk this morning, but the huskies are happy outside in the rain...I don't know how they can be so comfy!

Jack is taking a day off too...hiding under the covers on the couch, waiting for me to call him up to bed. So today will be a "feeling sorry for myself" day while I'm in bed and letting Alex take care of me! ;)

Good news though! The peas are coming up.

As are the pumpkins! The only seeds still hiding are the spring onions, which may take another 6-15 days; and the Roma tomatoes, again could take 14 more days (those are the seeds I found in the basement). I'm looking out the window and I guess I'm grateful right now that the weather is still cool and rainy because I'm in no shape to dig or plant. If anything, it's good timing...how's that for a positive spin? :)

Good and bad news...our winter tires are shot. Our mechanic warned us to get some new ones in the fall. They came used with the car and we knew this day was coming. So we're budgeting for studded winter tires for October. After our experience in March with the car slipping backwards down that icy mountain, we knew it was time, but I guess we were in denial because it's so darn expensive! Minimum a thousand including taxes, if we want rims too, sigh. Oh well, that's life right? But...this leaves me with 4 empty tires that haven't been sitting in a dirty, ash-tray-smelling garage forever! I think I'm going to plant potatoes after all! :) I found these cute ideas on Pinterest for painting them:

I have to get to the Veseys Seed website to place my order soon! I'll likely only get my planter potatoes in June though, but that's fine by me, it'll give me time to paint the tires and figure out where to put them. :) So, I guess the lesson here is that from bad always comes good, if you look for it. :)

  1. Ouch and ugh! So sorry you took that nasty fall. I guess you've just added another statistic to "most accidents happen at home!" Glad you didn't break a bone or something more serious than your bruises on your bruises. This will slow you down a bit, but you've got to give yourself time to heal those strained and stressed muscles, etc.

What cute ideas for making planting in old tires attractive! Can't wait to see what you do with yours.

  2. Hi Mama Pea :) I feel like an amateur human, tripping like that lol...But that Arnica cream is a miracle. It's already helped the swelling in my fingers. Oh joy!! I'm not the type who can stay in bed when sick, but I will do my best. Alex wants to take care of me so I'll definitely let him! When I woke up this morning, he had all the pet food ready to go, the coffee maker all set up and he also prepped my Tylenols! :) And a little note of encouragement to take it easy and wake him up if I needed anything. I think I'd be lamenting more if the sun was out!

I have to look into what kind of paint to use for the tires, but I would like them to be colourful that's for sure! I said to Alex "what if something comes up and we have to use those tires again next winter and I've already painted them?" We laughed about the possibilities lol...

  3. Oh dear! I hope by the time this reaches you you are feeling a bit better. Its a good thing you didn't cut yourself bad from the glass! Let natural healing occur as best you can. Our emergency rooms are just that too, a very long wait. Are there walk in clinics in Quebec? That's what we use when its not a true emergency but you can't wait to see your own family doc. And we have quick care clinics that are a step above walk ins but you still need an appointment - which you usually get the same day. Its all really very silly and no wonder Manitoba's health dollars are stretched.

Keep checking your baby plants and talking to them...that might speed up the healing! :)

Oh winter tires. So expensive. But oh so necessary. I hope you can find a good deal!

    Feel better soon!

  4. Wow. I hope you didn't break anything. Wow-za. I almost fell today. Jasper flew under my feet and I luckily caught myself. Glad the cream is working. The tire ideas look like they'd work for potatoes too.

  5. I feel your pain! One morning many years ago when I was stumbling around half awake, I stubbed my baby toe on my briefcase that was sitting on the floor and broke it -- OMG it hurt SO MUCH! May you heal quickly (and hopefully nothing is broken, just sprained)!

  7. Not much a doctor would do other than tell you to take some pills so it will just take time. Poor dogs probably hope you can trot along with them soon.

  8. oh bummer. sorry to hear this. i hope it all heals soon. i don't fall often but the few times i did, i did it with gusto!

  9. So sorry for your fall and hope you feel better soon. Thank you for taking the time to answer my question about baking your coffee grounds! Some of those tire ideas are so cute but did you research to see if they are safe to use for planting. I know some people do but then I read some time ago that they released something. If you find out let me know. Not that I have room for them! LOL Isn't it so exciting to see something sprouting through the soil! Nancy

  10. Rain, I'm so sorry you took a tumble & hurt yourself. TAke good care of yourself by letting your honey take care of you. For your sake I'm glad he can cook. You fix some lovely meals but now isn't the time for you to be cooking.
I will keep thinking good thoughts for your healing. Sandy

  11. I have ordered some Arnica to try fingers are really painful at the moment being doing lots of weeding and digging, I hope your foot improves, I felt such a idiot the other week tripping over and injuring my foot :-) Love the tyre ideas.

  12. 6 weeks ago I tripped over my smaller dog, or to be more precise, I avoided tripping over my smaller dog......I know how to fall safely so as to incur a minimum of damage, but in my struggle to avoid stepping on or landing on the dog who'd dashed infront of me and then stopped there I landed badly. Urgent care told me my elbow was just sprained. A week and a half later the orthopedic specialist said nope, hairline fracture of the radius bone, right at the elbow. Its still not healed 100%. Talk about feeling stupid!

For the commenter who asked about tires leaching something. All the tests that show tires leach stuff were done on ground tires, no one's been able to show that intact tires leach anything. Plus the large majority of what was leached was zinc, and depending on what you're growing you might be adding zinc to the soil anyway! I use tires in my gardens too.

  13. Thanks Dianna :))

The medical system sucks here...though when I lived on P.E.I., I never had any long waits at the walk-in clinics! Mind you I only went twice, but maybe half an hour tops. There are walk-in's here, but you have to line up at 6am to get a spot, it's insane. And the wait for a family doctor is very long too. We finally got one who moved two towns over, but he NEVER has appointments available...I figure what is the point???

Maybe I should buy my tires in Manitoba...lol...I don't think they'd give me that rebate though! :) We're both saving about $50 a month so by October, we should be okay :)

  14. Hi Kristina :)) I think I can safely say today that nothing is broken because I'm able to walk okay and type. Pet-related injuries...I've had many! The arnica is great, I can't wait to see how you'll make yours, I want to look for some seeds too.

  15. Oooh Debra, I just cringed!!! Eeek...I don't think any bones are broken thankfully!!

  16. Hey Nik :)) Oh, sick baby, you mean the horse's baby? I hope things are okay!! The arnica is like a miracle, I've been using it on all my sore muscles, it's almost time to order more!

  17. Hi Gill :) You're right, I've given up going to doctors unless I know that I need a prescription and even then I try everything I can to heal myself. We spent an hour playing with the dogs to get their energy out yesterday so they were happy! :)

  18. Lol Joyce, I think that I could describe my fall as "gusto" too...boy, it was scary too, because I was in the dark and I knew I was going to hit hard...

  19. Hi Nancy :)) If you look below at Ruth's comment, she explains about the tires MUCH better than I could ever! In a nutshell, they are safe if intact. I have so many ideas for the tires...now I wish I had more, but I need to control myself lol...I get carried away with the gardening ideas. We're still renting and I have to keep in mind that we'll be lugging all this to our new place in a few years!

  20. Hi Sandy! :) Thanks, I let Alex do everything for me yesterday! Though I did make dinner last night, something very easy, I can't help myself, I feel weird not being in the kitchen!! I get restless. But he did help and did all the cleanup and took care of the pets, I'm feeling grateful for that!

  21. Hi Dawn :)) I hope the arnica works well for you too! I used it mostly on my pinky finger that felt broken (isn't broken) and just a day and a half later, I'm typing away without too much pain. I remember reading about you tripping! Yes, it's more our egos that hurt isn't it lol?

  22. Hi Ruth! :)) I love your profile photo, I'm guessing it's one of your dogs? Oh gosh, I hope you heal quickly! I've had so many broken bones over the years, especially as a kid, I didn't mind being in a cast then, but I would NOT want that now. I think I'm okay, I'm giving it a few days, but I seem to be healing, just still feeling silly lol...

And thanks for the tire information! I couldn't answer that question at all. Right now I'm using the 4 I have, but in the future, I'll likely use more of them. What a great idea to plant in!

  23. Oooh, owie! Hope you are on the mend. There is nothing worse that tripping over something in the dark. Been there, done that. You go with your tires! I have had a lot of success with potatoes planted in tires - plus, you can move them around. Feel better soon.

  24. Thanks Susan :) I'm feeling better today, I can walk again! :) I can't wait to get those potatoes! I ordered them this morning! :)

  25. Ouch! So sorry to hear about your fall...I hope you heal up quickly as gardening season is upon you! Glad the Arnica helps...I've never heard of it but I wrote it down just in case. Jack is a hoot! I love the teapot tire creation! I can't wait to see what you make!

  26. Hi again Rain, Thank you Ruth for that information but now could I ask what do you mean by intact tires? Thanks so much. Nancy

    ReplyDelete
  27. Rain, yes, thats my bigger dog!

Nancy: intact as in not ground up or seriously deteriorated. I do cut the sidewalls out for my garden, it gives me an extra several inches of growing space. But any tire showing deterioration or holes, especially if the edges of the holes look crumbly, I don't use. Bald tires are fine, crumbly isn't.

  28. Hi Sam :) Thank you :) I'm feeling better every day except that now my bruising is at the really blue ugly stage!! I have to think about my tires!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Nancy, I'm glad that Ruth is able to answer these questions because I can't!! :) I don't mind if you ask more questions if you need to because I'm learning about this too :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks Ruth for that information. I wonder if it's hard to cut those side walls out or not? What kind of tool do you use? Your dog is so handsome and beautiful!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Either a circular saw or a reciprocating saw (the heavier duty blades with the bigger teeth work better) will cut out the sidewalls. I find a circular saw easier to use though its harder to make a neat cut (but then I'm the only one who notices that lol). One trick, don't try to come up into the sidewall from inside the center of the tire, there's a wire rim inside the edge and it'll kill your blade. Just cut down into the sidewall right next to the edge of the tread.
