Crunchy!

Hi Everyone :)

The theme for today's Scribble Picnic is "Crunchy"...now what could be crunchier than a nice crisp fresh carrot? Bugs thinks it's the bee's knees!! :) (Follow the link for more crunchy scribbles!)

Have I mentioned this before?? According to the creators of Bugs Bunny (Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng and Bob Clampett), Clark Gable eating a carrot in the movie "It Happened One Night" inspired them to give Bugs Bunny that carrot crunching characteristic. :)

And this is my watercolour version of "Crunchy" - it's the forest floor. Have you ever walked in a pine forest on a warm and dry day? All you can hear is "crunch crunch crunch" from the pine needles underfoot.

You can't sneak up on anyone in a pine forest! :) The dogs hear even a chipmunk running around from tree to tree.

Speaking of crunchy, this week I made my Cinnamon Crunch Knots. They taste just like donuts, we love them!

The crunchiest part of these delicious treats is the cinnamon sugar mix that melts off the pastry during the baking and hardens into a sweet, burnt and crunchy treat! :)

Another crunchy treat is a BLT on homemade toasted bread with fries! I love my "diner" baskets! :) We've been having dinner on the screened-in veranda and it's so nice and relaxing!

I wanted to show you an update of the container garden - mainly the potatoes. We had about 3 days of rain, then 3 days of lots of sunshine and everything has "jungled-up"!! The "tater tires" are booming! The two containers in front have carrots starting to come up too. This container garden has been a lot of fun this year!

Besides lots of porch time, mothering the container garden and keeping an eye on our robin's nest in the lilac tree...life is very good here in the mountains. We had a few veterinary challenges lately...Oscar the cat kept scratching at his ears to the point where they were in need of medication and the dreaded cone...Poor him...but as I type, he's all better and free again. :)

In February we had to rush to the vet because Charlie's face swelled up like this, we thought maybe it was a spider bite...I took this photo in February...but last weekend, the SAME THING happened, I woke up to her face triple the size it should be...because it was a holiday weekend (of course right?), all the vets were closed, so I gave her doses of Benadryl for 24 hours and she's just fine now thankfully. So, we were thinking, two pets got sick in the last week...that must be it...Nope...

Marlene hurt her front leg. She was running around in a wood pile and started limping a few days ago. I had to stop the dog walks each morning, just to let her heal. She seemed better today too so I took a chance and walked the dogs in the woods, I can happily say she's fine too. We don't really know how old she is...could be anywhere from 9 years old to 13 years old...we've noticed she's been having trouble with her hind legs too so we are starting Glucosamine for her...and for hound dog Jack since he's 12 years old now.  These shelter pets are so endearing and we would do anything for them. :)

July is just around the corner! Time is flying way too fast!

  1. I adore Bugs Bunny, but not carrots(lol) However, please send me some of those gooey rolls when you can. Kudos on your plants growing so well, and the club sandwich is making me want to fix one right now, Rain! Hugs...RO

  2. Golly the pets have been through the ringer lately. Hope they all feel better soon. The cinnamon rolls looks great. I haven't made them for years now. It's more of a winter baking for me, considering heating up the kitchen is not fun in the summer. Have a great week.

  3. That's got to be an allergy or a bug bite... I am not a vet, so I don't really know, but what else could it be? Do you have any plants she got into or a cactus?

  4. Your garden is coming along wonnnnnderfully!!!!

    Food is yummy, as usual.

Actually glad you have had 3 pet related happenings. Now you can rest! :-) "Things coming in 3's and all." :-)

  5. Cinnamon rolls must have been invented in heaven, I love them even if the sugar does put my teeth on edge. Poor pets, at least they are all okay now. My old dog Ben has been on Glucosamine for 4 years now and is reaping the benefit.

  9. I love that you rescued shelter animals,, they for the most part make the best pets and we always go into the relationship knowing that their health is not predictable,, I'm glad both are healing.
The potatoes look great! My husbands dad had the best tire garden, it was funny because they lived on a farm with a huge garden but Garry's Dad was always experimenting and those black tires produced some of the best potatoes, strawberries, zucchini and tomatoes! Yours look amazing!! So does dinner in the diner baskets , I love those dishes and napkins,,

  10. Funny, I was thinking about carrots too this week but went with something else orange and crunchy. You know I can almost smell the leaves and pine trees as your picture shows. We do have to remember to use all our senses with nature so we don't miss out. So sorry to hear about your pets. I was out weeding yesterday and within minutes something got my ear. Good thing I'm home today, it isn't pretty.

  11. That being the reason I can not bring the barn cats home....vet bills, oh and feeding them not to mention litter! Crazy. I am so sorry that you have had to deal with all that with the pets. Never ending when you have the number you have I am sure. You one dog might be trying to catch bees and getting stung. Loving your crunch! Very nicely done.

  14. Carrots — of course! Up there for thinking 99! (I hope that phrase isn't lost on you...Maxwell Smart tv series?)

I love your illustration! Never knew that about Clark Gable being their inspiration for the carrot-eating trait of Bugs.

Great takes on the prompt, Rain!

    Love bread with hot chips/fries!

I hope you get lots of spuds! I grew them once many years ago and I was so proud of myself. However, the soil I planted the carrots in was too hard for them so some very interesting carrot shapes were plucked from the garden that year. haha

So sorry about the sick pets...they do say things happen in threes. Glad that they are all well on the mend. Our pets are so precious.

Agreed...I can hardly believe July is almost here. Goodness, where did the first half of the year go???!!!

  17. Hi Rain, we call them chips over here. Great food. Every time I come there is delicious food. Remember fries=American way chips=English way.

  18. Hi Rain! Everything looks great over at your place. Well, except for when the fur babies fall ill. But I'm glad they are all much better.

Cinnamon Crunch Knots...mmmmmm...mmmmm I'm going to have to try those. I bet the house smells amazing when you make them.

As usual, there are some delicious meals being shared here. Thank goodness I just ate or else I'd be starving now. LOL

I enjoyed walking in the pine forest. It would be a wonderful place:)

  20. I'm sure Mel Blanc wished they had come up with something else, as he reportedly hated carrots... :) This is a tough time of year for our sensitive furry kids - poor Charlie! I have a large supply of Benadryl for Butters, as he seems to have some seasonal allergies of a mysterious nature. I'm dealing with Lovey's torn ACL now, too - it never ends, does it? Your container garden looks fabulous! And those cinnamon knots make me want to cry... :)

  24. I hope all your critters are feeling 100% soon, Rain. It's hard to see our beloved pets suffering.
On a happier note ~ Holly cow! Look at those potatoes! Not to mention those cinnamon Crunch Knots and the BLTs! I've been stuck on the exactly same weight to a tenth of a pound for thirteen days ~ Argh. I hope my weight doesn't go up tomorrow from looking at your yummy food! Hugs to you, my friend!

  27. If you have the funds and a vet who would do it have her hips X rayed for hip dysplasia.

I don't know if Canada has one or you could send them to OFA (orthopedic foundation for Animals)to be read in the USA. Unless you have a Vet who is confident in their ability to read them.

At her age it would be good to know if it is simply "old dog" arthritis or if she has an issue with her hips. Treating it could require more than just an OTC glucosamine if she does.

    Good luck .

  28. Your poor fur babies! They are so lucky they have you! Love bugs! LOL! You are so right about the pine needles! That is really interesting about were the carrot came from, that movie! My mouth is watering from you Cinnamon Crunch knots! The garden looks great! Big Hugs!

  29. My wife hates the sound of crunching carrots. And I want to try all that delicious food.

  30. Do you have mosquitoes up there? Down here, old tires catch the water in the rim, and the mosquitoes breed in them. Since yours are all filled up with dirt, that probably isn't an issue for you though.

We keep prednizone (however that's spelled) here for both ourselves and the animals. It's good for insect bites, poison ivy, and respiratory problems.

Glad all goes well for you all.

  31. I just got done catching up with you! Your garden looks fantastic and your drawings too! You just get better and better! I have missed you and was wondering how the garden was coming along. 3 weeks of company is tiring and expensive. Love them dearly but glad to have my quiet life back! LOL! I will be staying on top of your 'adventures' from now on....hopefully that's all the company for this year.

  32. Now see, Rain, I would have immediately thought of those Cinnamon Crunch Knots when I heard the word "crunchy" - not carrots. But that is very interesting about Clark Gable and his influence on Bug Bunny liking carrots so much, so I'm glad your mind is healthier-minded than mine. ;^) I hope you don't have to visit the vet again for a while. Sweet pet pictures, though. Why are animals (and children, I've noticed) often so sweet when they're not feeling well?

  33. Hey Girl. Checking in on you. How's Marlene's leg today? I hope well. I saw the blue eggs on IG. How cool is that?
