Thursday Art Date: Chilling and Paint Party Friday!

Hello Friends! ☺️

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Chilling! I decided to celebrate the idea of swimming in the cold chilling waters of the ocean for my pieces today! Poor Bugs thinks he's invincible, but I think that arctic water is a little too cold for him!! Has anyone out there ever done a Polar Bear Dip on New Year's Day? It's always for a good cause, but I personally think it's insanity!!!

Majestic Blue (Watercolour)

The blue whale always fascinated me. It's the largest creature in the ocean - and on earth for that matter. I can only imagine its beauty but it would be a chilling adventure to stumble upon one in the ocean! I went whale watching one summer while visiting Pleasant Bay in Nova Scotia, it was something I'll never forget! We mostly saw pilot whales, they can grow to 22 feet long. Now that was intimidating for me, I couldn't imagine seeing a 100-foot long blue whale from that little boat!

Seal Ballet (Watercolour)

Another lovely creature I saw a lot of along the shores of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia was the grey seal. Did you know they can live up to 45 years old? It was a treat to see such ocean wildlife!

Jack likes to chill with his favourite stuffed animal after dinner. Alex and I had been watching a lot of Three Stooges shorts when we got that toy, so it was christened Mr. Curly. If I say "Jack, go get Mr. Curly!" he runs and grabs it. Very cute!

That's all for now folks, please check out the link widget below to see more Chilling artwork! And please join me on Sunday for my food and pets post. 🐾🐾🐾

I'm also linking up with Paint Party Friday tomorrow!

  1. Lovely watercolours and I like the Bugs Bunny cartoon too! I've never done a polar bear plunge because the shock of the frigid water would probably give me a heart attack!

  5. Beautiful art Rain, the first one is soooo funny. Love the whale and the seal, too. Such fantastic see creatures. I would never think of going into water which is so cold, brrrrr! Taking photos when it's frosty is hard enough, but swimming, oh no! Your Jack is such a cutie, and your cats always look happy. Have a wonderful day, hopefully not too chilling! Hugs, Valerie

  7. Rain,

No, I have not done the polar bear swim nor do I have any interest. I'm with you, it's insanity! I don't even like being outdoors fully dressed when it's cold, so there's nothing in this world that can get me to put my swimsuit on and take a plunge into some chilling cold water. Nope, it's not going to happen in this lifetime. :D I love your illustration, though. It's furrtastic! I'd be ever bit like Bugs, except I don't know that I'd even stick a toe in the frigid water. Your whale looks graceful and beautiful in the chilling blue water. It almost looks like he's in the stars but I'd imagine this is from the angle perspective below the creature looking up toward a night sky. Is that right? Nicely don!

Jack always has this look of innocence. It's in the eyes. He's so adorable. Leo and Dana I suspect are trouble. Cats are designed to be just that with a capital T. lol

Thanks for hosting the artsy fun, my friend. Have a good weekend!

  8. Oh my gosh, that photo of Jack is priceless.

I wouldn’t tip a toe in water less than 70 degrees, but I do know people who have done the polar bear plunge. I do not understand why anyone would want to punish their body like that.

  9. you captured chilly... we woke to yet more snow, our 9th snow since October! Brrrr. I swam off the shores of Prince Edward Island, talk about cold waters. Mr Curly's Keeper... adorbs

  10. Was just reading an article about how those who regularly expose themselves to chilling conditions may live longer. It was an interesting bit of information, but not very compelling - to me, anyway. OTOH, having entered a phase in life where I carry around my own internal furnace I find getting chilled a bit refreshing. But not the wet kind of chilled. That sounds insane to me, too. :) Love your artwork today, Rain. Especially, the seal! It really does look like it's dancing...

  11. I didn't know they could live that long.
Wow, 45 years. Not too shabby.
Love the look on Bugs. What a hoot!

  12. I love your "chilly" paintings. Such a graceful seal indeed! My daughter did a polar bear challenge one year and lost her croc in the process. You would have thought it would float back to her, but it didn't. Or maybe it was just too chilly to go back in for it!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Your creativitiy is showing .... How do you come up with those "cool" ideas like the polar bears and bugs putting his toe in the water. So clever. And that whale - beautiful. That picture of your dog is adorable.

  14. Sweet puppy! :)

Yes, the polar bear dip is insanity! Yikes!

  15. Oh Jack ❤
I went whale watching on Vancouver island. All we saw was the fin of a grey whale but that was already very impressive...lol

  16. Hello from Idaho and hope your day is going good. Stop in from Christains and your little doggy is so cute.

  21. I've seen people do the New Year's day dip here in the UK but it isn't something I'd do. I don't go in the sea in summer either, far too cold for me.
    Lovely art and cute dog.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, Jack is just the sweetest little thing, how cute! Lovely artwork, love the blue whale. No polar bear dipping for me, no way! I hate the cold ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I had no idea grey seals could live that long. Now I do lol. Your whale art is so pretty. I can almost heat it calling. 💓jack💓

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rain, I have done a polar bear-esque event: jumping into a swimming pool after New Year's at midnight. Outside temp was around 45 degrees so I assume the pool was the same. It was short and sweet (and I convinced a bunch of teenage boys to do it based on my example) - so probably yes, I will do it again.

    I love the whales.

  25. Oh Rain, everytime I come over to comment I get interupted by something or someone ... but I always walk away with a chuckle. The grin on your polar bears face is soooo funny. Your paintings are gorgeous. Your use of color make them exceptional ... I would love to be able to paint the way you do. And, your dog with his wooby is a riot. A perfect shot ... good eye. You have a cat that looks like my Fonzi. I love my animals as do you. They make my day in so many ways . Next week I am going to have to be creative ... brown and gray, oh my, you challenge me :) Stay warm and I will see you next week.

  28. Oh Jack, you are just adorable. Loving the art work, and wishing to have the ump to do some myself. Just not getting there as of yet. Kitties are so sweet looking. There is something about a cat that just moves my heart and being I was not a cat person till 2.5 yrs ago...too funny huh?

  29. Well, I've missed out again! Will try to be a regular in 2020.

  30. Beautiful artwork as always. And I just LOVE images of Jack. He is so darn cute!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Oh Jack is hilarious! His portrait with Mr. Curly made me burst out laughing! Those eyes! I love Cape Breton. Your memories brought back many memories for me. I have visited Pleasant Bay a number of times, mostly before whale watching became popular. Your artwork, as always, is fun! I'm with Bugs ~ burrr! No way would I ever take a polar bear swim. I think the shock of the cold would kill me ~ LOL! One day I will link something "artistic" to your Thursday blog. I'm still buried, but I'm thankful that I have this time at home to take care of things. Hugs to you, my friend!

  32. Awww love the photographs of Jack and also Leo and Dana :)
Lovely art, especially the blue whale.

    All the best Jan

  33. Thanks Debra :) I totally agree. I feel in shock when I dip my toe into the lake in the summer!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks Christine :) I think Bugs definitely passed!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks Elke :) I'm glad people get my sense of humour with the cartoon drawings!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Thanks Baili :)) I think if I saw a blue whale close up, I'd be scared, but it would be such a treat to watch her swim! Oh yes, I would never jump into water in the winter! I have a hard enough time getting into water in the hot summer!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Valerie :) Jack is the apple of my eye :) I can't help photographing him, he's very good as a model lol! I'm glad you enjoyed my sense of humour with Bugs Bunny! :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Thanks Monica :) I had to redo it because I made a mistake trying to use detergent to make bubbles!!! :o

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks Cathy :) Gosh I totally agree...even when I'm in my snow suit for 5 minutes outside, I can't tolerate it. Funny though, when I was younger, I ski'd, tobogganed...I still take out the snow shoes once in a while if it's milder, but I can't handle it anymore! I like your take on my blue whale!!! Very cool what you saw! Actually I was trying to create bubbles in the water. I tried using a technique where you mix some water, dish soap and a bit of paint...blow it with a straw and transfer the bubbles onto the canvas. The tutorial I saw was perfect but mine because a sludge lol...so I just painted the bubbles on! All of our cats are trouble!!! :)

  40. Thanks Arleen :) Jack is priceless for sure! :) Punish is a good word to describe the polar bear dip lol!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Thanks LeeAnna :) P.E.I. water is very cold!!! That Atlantic ocean...I lived there for a year and I couldn't really get into the water much either! You have more snow than I do for sure...I'm still not used to that much in November though!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Thanks Jenn :) I'm glad it warmed your heart and didn't chill it! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks Becki :) One time Alex and I went to a spa for our anniversary and it was in March so there was still snow and the river was quite cold. We spent time in hot tubs and in the saunas, and they had a section where you could plunge into the river right after being in the sauna. Alex did it but there was no way I was doing it!! He said it felt great, but I'll just have to take his word for it lol!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks Ivy :) Bugs is a bit of a wuss isn't he? :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Thanks Lorraine :) That's funny about your daughter's croc, I would think it probably froze to the ice lol!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Thanks Sandy :) I appreciate your comment! I think my many years of watching cartoons help me with my ideas for the drawings!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks Sandi :) Jack is my heart that's for sure. I can't even take my mitten off for too long in the winter, forget being in frigid water!!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Sis :) Oh lol...at least you saw a fin!!! That's funny. Well, I got lucky because there were lots of pods of whales when I went out. We were hoping to see some humpback whales and orcas but they were a no show! It was neat to see the water spouting up too!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Hi Dora :) I'll be right over for some coffee! Thanks for stopping by! I'm late responding to comments! :-s

  54. Thanks Linda :) I'm glad you like my sense of humour for the drawing! :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks Linda (Lin) :) I have a hard time in the lakes here in the summer. It takes me a long time to ease in and it really has to be a very hot and humid day for me to do it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks Denthe :) Me too, cold is far too uncomfortable lol! Jack really is a sweet little fella! And so patient with me for the photos lol!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks Marsha :) Jack is very easy to love! :) I would absolutely freak if I saw a blue whale but would love to hear her call that's for sure!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks Andrea :) I'm glad you like my sense of humour! I enjoyed trying to find a good mocking smile to put on the bears lol! I'm so glad I am challenging you! :) Fonzi, lol...that's a great name for your cat!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Thanks Dixie :) Isn't it special to see whales? It's so rare for most people, I think we're blessed! Yeah, no polar bear dip for me either!!!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Thanks Carol :) I'm glad you enjoyed it!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks Pam :) I think it's cool you became a cat person! I think it takes the right cat! I was always a dog person, well, still am, but when we got Baby Oscar, my heart fell for him and I started to really enjoy having cats as well!

  65. Thanks Louise :) You should see Jack...I need to video it one time, when I say "get Mr. Curly" he runs for it. He's never without his little "pet", it's very cute. I would love to see your artistry Louise!!! I do hope you join in! Oh Pleasant Bay...I went there...hmmm...early 90's? Something like that. I did the Cabot Trail but Pleasant Bay had my heart. I stayed at a lovely B&B, the lady was originally from Montreal and was she a cook!!! Oh my, it was such a treat. I saw my first moose there too and of course the whales. I'd been living in Mtl so it was really new for me. That's when I decided to move away from the city and start a life as a mountain mamma! :) I stopped by The Rocks in NB too on the way home, another visual treat!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thanks Jan :) I had a lot of fun painting the sea creatures this week! :)

  67. Great paintings - especially the whale, that one really is beautiful with the swirl of movement in the deep, cold, dark waters - amazing. I've not done a New Year's Day dip, but I have gone from a sauna into a fjord when it was ice-covered apart from at the shore where they'd cleared it for swimming - magical! And then back into the sauna of course!
