I do love visual stories. I used to be an avid book-reader. When I burned out in 2003, I suffered permanent cognitive skill function; and one of the issues I have is the inability to remember things in the short term. This makes reading books very difficult and frustrating for me as I tend to re-read paragraphs over and over because I can't remember what I just read! I've become a visual-gal and movies provide wonderful entertainment for me!
I've been really loving these 3-D Trick Art tutorials I've found on You Tube! Have you ever tried them?
Most Westerns are dominated by a male villain/hero. I loved the movie The Quick and the Dead because Sharon Stone played a tough yet vulnerable heroin in the Wild West. It's a great movie, also stars Gene Hackman (who plays a wonderful villain), Russell Crowe and Leo DiCaprio.
A GREAT Western movie that is on my top ONE...is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. This movie has it all. And it has a cast of greats: Lee Marvin (always an amazing bad guy), John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. Of course there are many amazing supporting actors like Andy Divine, Vera Miles and Strother Martin. If you're a Western fan, I'm sure you've seen this movie! :)

We've been eating leftovers this week and trying to "eat from the freezer"...this happens every year after the holidays! A great comfort food to try is Tortilla Soup.
I've been donut crazy lately too. I made my Baked Jelly Donuts. I also recently got some donut pans and I'm going to try to make all sorts of baked donuts in the very near future!

i too was movies lover and quick and the dead is one of the my favorite of both of us ,watched it three times and each time found it GREAT!
i find old actors face very fascinating ,i can't find such intriguing feeling and expression on new faces i don't know why

The stars, once again, for me are Evening Grosbeaks, eclipsing the movie stars. I think I must be a bit of an oddity almost. I love your Bugs sketch! LOL I always thought the episodes with Bugs and Yosemite Sam where a lot of fun. We have The Quick and the Dead in our Amazon Prime cue. You did a nice job on Sharon Stone but my favorite is of The Duke. You did a fabulous job capturing his likeness! Oh yum, do those jelly filled donuts look good. I'm going to steal your recipe! The soup sounds good, too. I've not made either of these recipes so I'm anxious to give them a try. Sometimes small birds will fly up to the kitchen window where they can grab the screen to hang on. It's so cute to see them peek in at me. I have buoy bell (wind chime) just outside my kitchen window and sometimes they will land there or they'll hit the flapper making the bell ring. lol Thanks for hosting the fun. Lovely western art today Rain so many wonderful Portraits. I love tortilla soup although I only has it once in Mexico. The baked donuts look amazing. Sorry to hear about 2003.
If you want to try a more modern Western (and you have Netflix), try Big Kill. I was actually surprised I enjoyed it as much as I did. I think is some corners there is a revival of this genre.
That 3D Trick Art is great! And your portraits are amazing, especially John Wayne! I'm lusting after those jelly donuts -- in Manitoba, we call them "jambusters." It's a word unique to Manitoba. They were my favourite treat as a kid and I still love them today!
Hi Rain. I have been looking forward to your Western day. But, sorry I have nothing to offer in the way of a blog post that relates to westerns. I have lots of black and white memories from way back when TVs were 12 inch and a trip to the cinema was like a western adventure. I think that's where my interest in North America stems from – I follow North American news and of course North American birds and North American music.
Your charcoal sketches are super, especially the last, even though I don't know the film. But the B&W Sharon Stone wins today for me at least. Keep those bird videos coming, more so when the snow clears and your migrant birds start to arrive from Florida and the Caribbean. Get swotting.
Your art is always so exciting. From bugs to 3-D all great. I like the soup but give me a donut anytime. Yours look sooooo good. Nice short videos too. Have a really wonderful day.
Great sketches of so many greats. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is one of our faves too. Silverado is another good one with Sharon Stone in it. I have a donut pan too. Mine is silicone and I wish I had purchased a metal one. So far the donuts have fallen apart when I try and remove them from the pan. In will keep trying though.
Today is my daughter's birthday and I am very busy trying to prepare, so I will be commenting late (again:( But, I am having a problem with Mister Linky ... it gives me an error message every time I try to enter my name. Hi Rain! Wow, another of my faves - the Duke. Your charcoal paintings are amazing. You nailed all 3 of those actors. I've read bios of Wayne and Stewart but not Marvin. LV is a classic but I'm more of a Stagecoach and The Searchers Duke fan. And once I learned the back story about True Grit, Wayne totally deserved that Oscar. Here's a good one from his bio: Guess who was Mel Brooks' first choice to play Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles? Yup, John Wayne. Bwahahaha, can you even see that? Wayne had the good sense to politely turn it down. He told Brooks he could never say the N word on screen but he's be first in line to see it because the script was hilarious. xoxo
Nice! I loved The Quick and The Dead too! I has a sparrow who sat on our window box outside my kitchen window. He pecked and pecked at the glass. I think he wanted in where it was warm! More snow photos please!!! We didn't get much this year sadly...
"Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam and the deer and the antelope play" ... sorry, just singing along with bugs. I loved cowboys when I was a kid and I probably still would but they seem to have stopped making cowboy movies these days. Yes, Lee Marvin was a bad guy, so I am left with the feeling I didn't like him and when I was of the age where I was watching cowboys, I wasn't paying attention to how good of an actor he was. John Wayne too, I like him because he was a good guy and Jimmy Stewart I loved for other movies like his 6 ft tall invisible rabbit friend, Harvey. But I never strayed from Roy Rogers ... just being loyal, I guess. Your drawings, of course, are superb and I could easily have named them without your help just by looking at them. Oh, I love Tortilla Soup. Of course I buy mine at the store (Panera's soups are really good), but I can only imagine how good your soup is. And there you go again ... donuts??? How come you don't weigh 200 pounds. I could never each such delicacies and get away with it ... though once again, you make my mouth water :( Your gross Beak probably sees his reflection in the window and is pecking at it because it is in his territory. My cardinals used to do that a lot when I lived on the lake especially the females. So Charlie, like my Izzi, has that wonderful thick winter coat and thus can go out and love playing in the snow without giving a thought to the cold. Sadly, I don't have a tolerance for the cold anymore so I am always trying to rush her back in ... but not before she throws the snow up in the air with her nose, licks it and then dashes around like a wild little Indian. Winter is her favorite time as she gets too hot in the summer. Well enough said ... another wonderful week with you and your followers ... Hope all is well. I am looking forward to getting my vaccine shots so I can feel a little safer ... My husband and I would probably not survive Covid if we came down with it, so it has been a long stressful year. Not a fan of westerns- I never did like them at all. However, I AM a fan of your western art here rain- they are all fantastic! Ooh those donuts look especially good. It has been a long time since I have watched a Western film. John Wayne is a favorite cowboy and actor. You are so right, Lee Marvin plays a great bad guy or villain. Those western charcoals of Marvin, Wayne and Stewart were really great, Rain, and yeah to including a woman too. I must admit to not having seen any of the films mentioned as I am not a western movie fan, but you are right that Lee Marvin is always a nasty character even in non-westerns. I know what you mean about reading books and sometimes my concentration also wanders. In truth I enjoy reading but couldn't tell you the plot lines of most of the books I have read, now movies are another story...thank goodness!
I promised to stop by and am finally here. I had to take a break because I was still not well from my surgery. I love how cozy Bugs looks in western garb. He seems to feel right at home there.
I know better than to visit when I'm hungry, but I love seeing your tortilla soup and those donuts.

I made a large pot of 15-bean soup with hot sausage tonight with corn muffins. We just watched our 1st snow fall of winter. I always feel so sorry for huskies in the summer.
here they are giving vaccines to the second group which includes people over 65 and essential workers. I am guessing you are not in either of those groups, but I would suggest you look on line for the local Health Department (I got mine through my County Health Department). They should be posting information as to which groups are being vaccinated and which groups are to come. Once your group is up, they should post the when and where information. I know you are pretty much isolated and probably not much at risk, but it won't hurt for you to get protection so it is one less thing to worry about, right?
Love your picture of the camera at the feeder. So many birds! I really like the 3D horse and really need to look into these tutorials! And no, your charcoal drawing don't look clownish. I really like them! I never drew much with charcoal, as I always seem to have dirty paper all around the drawing. *LOL* Have a great day, Rain!

Rain - the author of the book "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", Dorothy Johnson, was raised in Whitefish, Montana. At the museum where I volunteer, we have a display all about her. I like any movie with Jimmy Stewart! Those donuts look mouth-watering. Good thing it is only a picture!! It made me think of paczki donuts, a Polish tradition for Fat Tuesday. I must say I was not at first convinced your horse drawing wasn't 3-D. I looked up how one would do this and I am so impressed! Even watching a drawing made so that it looks 3-D, it still hard not to see it as a 3-D object once it's done. Very cool. :)
my goodness those donuts look dangerous! I think I need to keep away from those. When I was a young thing in my first job at a university and much slimmer than I am now, I used to buy chocolate coated jam donuts from the university canteen. Yummy! ReplyDeleteIt has been a long time since I have watched a Western film. John Wayne is a favorite cowboy and actor. You are so right, Lee Marvin plays a great bad guy or villain. Your Bugs sketch is cute, I love all your sketches and portraits. The soup and the donuts look delicious. You must know I love your bird photos, I love all the birds. I wish the Evening Grosbeaks would visit my yard, there were here once years ago. Charlie does look happy out running in the snow. Wonderful post and photos. Those birds are happy to have a good place to eat! I know you love watching them too! The Western art is very cool. I love old Cowboy books and have a few on my bookshelves. So much to love in this post! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteThose western charcoals of Marvin, Wayne and Stewart were really great, Rain, and yeah to including a woman too. I must admit to not having seen any of the films mentioned as I am not a western movie fan, but you are right that Lee Marvin is always a nasty character even in non-westerns. I know what you mean about reading books and sometimes my concentration also wanders. In truth I enjoy reading but couldn't tell you the plot lines of most of the books I have read, now movies are another story...thank goodness!

ReplyDeleteI made a large pot of 15-bean soup with hot sausage tonight with corn muffins. We just watched our 1st snow fall of winter. I always feel so sorry for huskies in the summer.

here they are giving vaccines to the second group which includes people over 65 and essential workers. I am guessing you are not in either of those groups, but I would suggest you look on line for the local Health Department (I got mine through my County Health Department). They should be posting information as to which groups are being vaccinated and which groups are to come. Once your group is up, they should post the when and where information. I know you are pretty much isolated and probably not much at risk, but it won't hurt for you to get protection so it is one less thing to worry about, right?

ReplyDeleteRain - the author of the book "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", Dorothy Johnson, was raised in Whitefish, Montana. At the museum where I volunteer, we have a display all about her. I like any movie with Jimmy Stewart! Those donuts look mouth-watering. Good thing it is only a picture!! It made me think of paczki donuts, a Polish tradition for Fat Tuesday. Hi Rain- your artwork is very nice! Love the birds and the donuts...oh how I wish I could eat a few of those! Have to stick to lower carbs, but donuts are one of those "yummys" that are hard to let go of. Have a nice rest of the week1
ReplyDeleteI must say I was not at first convinced your horse drawing wasn't 3-D. I looked up how one would do this and I am so impressed! Even watching a drawing made so that it looks 3-D, it still hard not to see it as a 3-D object once it's done. Very cool. :)

When I was a young thing in my first job at a university and much slimmer than I am now, I used to buy chocolate coated jam donuts from the university canteen. Yummy!
