Little Sprouts

This is such a welcome sight first thing in the morning! Sunshine feeding my spirit and my plants! We still have a few feet of snow in some parts of the yard, but I'm seeing big results in the melting process and I know winter is over. The Weather Network is calling for some snow next week, but I'm not even worried about it! :) Can you see how yellow my lemon is by the window? I feel great today! It's a little chilly though, the high will only be 5C, so I may not be able to sit out on the porch too long. I need to keep going through my cookbooks and make my meal plan for the next month. Just having the sun in my window is such a mood booster!

Yesterday I started my sprouts. Nothing fancy, just wide-mouthed Mason jars with some cheesecloth on top. I bought only two packs to start, alfalfa and a "spring salad" mix of broccoli, radish, alfalfa and red clover. I soaked them for 6 hours as directed.

Then drained them and let them sit overnight. For the next few days I have to rinse and drain twice a day, and let them sit and do their thing. In five days I should be eating some sprouts! If this works out, then I'll likely have an assembly line type of dealie going so I always have some sprouts to munch on.

Could it be????? Did my seed-whispering work?

  1. Hooray for your sunshine! We could use a little more of that here. Still not dry enough for me to work out in the garden, but I, too, have started seedlings peeking through the soil. Yippee! I'm holding myself back from starting some other ones too soon. It's hard.

Good luck with your sprouting jars. It's been a while since I've done that. The last I did was sunflower sees in soil . . . a little different method but we love them. Soon as we get my garden/utility/potting room done and in operation, trays of them all winter long will be on the agenda.

  3. Hi Rain! Ahahaha, your kitchen looks just like mine with sprout jars lined up. You need to start making kvass now and then it will be identical! :)

Isn't it amazing how much a little sunshine can give?! We are at 15 degrees currently and I went out for a walk a lunch. Its glorious out. We are promised snow for Sunday but I hope that it will give us a miss...probably not though. But that's ok - for right now its sunny. And does it ever smell good outside - clean!

I checked my jumble last night and lots more little green shoots have sprung! I am happy. Someone likes my singing obviously :) I think you are right - that looks to be a wee beet!!

    Have a lovely afternoon!

  8. You've got beet! I love sprouts - I usually have a jar or two going all winter. It's the only winter crop I've mastered. Are you going to do your massive shopping/menu plan again? It is awe-inspiring!

  9. Hi Mama Pea :)) Yay for sunshine! There is more of it today! Spring has sprung in the Laurentian mountains! I'm doing many MANY happy dances! :) I'm SO tempted to start more seedlings, but I need self-control...I just don't have the room and the weather isn't reliable yet. I'll concentrate on the sprouts and my little seedlings for now! But who knows, maybe I'll put up another shelf for more...hmmm..that would appease me! :) I'm excited to taste those sprouts, 2-3 more days to go!

  11. Hi Dianna :)) Yes, lol...I can see an assembly line of sprout jars filling up the counter and tempting the cats to knock them all down (which nearly happened yesterday grrr!).

I'm sorry to brag, but our forecast has changed, NO SNOW for Easter!! Woo hoo! :)) I'm talking the little seedlings ears off, I hope it's working lol...enjoy your Friday! :)

  14. Hi Gill :)) Boo for snow, but it's gradually melting. That's how it is here, overnight it'll all be gone except for one little pile that will hang on until mid-May...stubborn snow that it is. The sprouts are great, I hope I like them as much as I remembered, they're so budget-friendly too.

  15. Hi Seeking Serenity :) I'm so glad your Myst is doing better! I'm lucky that my boyfriend has no interest in the news either. We just avoid it all and we're happier for it, mind you neither of us has family and "real life" friends in our lives, so it's never an issue, never a need to talk about anything other than what's going on for us at home, I like it that way.

  16. Hi Susan! :) Yes, I have beetSSSSS now! :) This morning more shot through the dirt! :) Oh yes, I'm doing the massive shopping menu plan...I'm taking my time and going through everything...the plan is Wednesday or Friday. The flyers switch on Thursdays here and usually on Tuesday I can see the Thursday flyer, so depending on the sales, that's when I"ll go. This time though I'm being reasonable...I'm shopping for 4 weeks, not (what has turned into) 8 weeks!!! :)

  17. I'm impressed with your photos. Particularly the one of the moon. I have an ancient cheap Walmart camera that I use. Been meaning to replace it with something better, maybe your photos will motivate me to get off of top dead center in that regard.

  18. Thank you Harry :)) That's how I made the decision to buy a better camera many years ago, it was seeing someone else's photo of the moon actually! I had a little kodak that couldn't take very good zoom photos, and I just wanted that photo of the moon! It's fun to have a good camera, I got mine as a gift, so I was lucky, they can get pricey...and I don't even know what all the buttons do yet lol...I've had it 3 years now!
