Scribble Picnic: Explore

Hi Everyone :)

The Scribble Picnic is back after a summer break! I'm so happy about this, I missed the weekly challenge!  Explore is the theme for today's artwork (follow the link to explore other lovely scribbles!). I'm not sure what's going on in this watercolour...but this gal is definitely on the fence about exploring this possibly haunted house....would you go in? I don't think I would!

Bugs decided to do a little exploring himself and look at that delicious discovery he made! I wonder if his treasure will make it to the museum or not. I tried my best to draw the Indiana Jones fedora...it may be too big for Bugs though! :)

Fairy Condo: I still spend some time every morning in the woods, exploring the area with the three dogs! I hopefully have a few more months before the weather stops me, so I'm taking full advantage of what the forest has to offer!

My friends on Instagram know all about my potato-obsession of late. This was my first harvest from six containers. Not too bad! I posted this one minute video on IG, but I wanted to share it with my Blogger friends too:

So far the potato count is 212 and I still have 4 sets of tires to go through! Some of them have potato scab...which is okay, just kind of ugly looking. From what I've read, it's because my soil is too acidic. I'll have to correct that next planting season. They are still edible, you just have to peel them.

Weather Lore From the Farmer's Almanac:

The Three Days of September (19, 21, and 22) rule the weather for October, November and December.

Keep an eye on your weather and see if it predicts the next three months! Today started off cold and rainy, but now the sun is out and it's supposed to be a fair day...so I'll be watching for this trend in October. :)

  1. To me, your little girl, looks as if she is on the threshold, of home, ready to go out into the world. Or not go. :-)

  4. If that is true about the weather we are going to have a fantastic winter. One can hope!

  5. Amazing video, thanks for sharing your potato harvest with us, so exciting and rewarding! Your explore art is fabulous too, and it looks like you are doing some exploring of your own in the forest!

  6. Oh those little baby spuds -- I would cook them whole and eat them with butter, salt, pepper and maybe a touch of dill. Yum!

  7. Oh, potatoes fresh out of the soil! How wonderful. brings back memories of unearthing our own red-skin potatoes.

  8. I think that potatoes are one of my favorite things to grow - harvesting them is like digging for treasure! You have a great harvest! And aren't they delicious? So glad to see you are back to drawing - I missed seeing your artwork!

  9. Maybe I'll try growing potatoes next year if they aren't too difficult.

  10. I love what you did for Scribble Picnic....you even captured the eerie haunted house atmosphere! Run away, little girl!!!!

    Nice exploration post all round.

    Great potato haul!

  11. two very contrasting pieces. I kind of like the bugs version a lot, it's fun.

I love potatoes - they always taste great.

    have a lovely day.

  12. Your watercolor is so thought provoking. I love the blueness of it! Great job with those potatoes. Your soil is so dark. I think my cousin (whose father was a farmer) once told me that black soil is good for growing celery.

  13. Thanks Wisps of Words :) I love the walks in the woods, but I have to say, it's getting harder and harder to pull myself out of bed in this cold damp weather! :)

  14. Hi Joyce :) Our weather is the same today as yesterday, so November should be cool with precipitation at the beginning, then fair and sunny for the rest of the month! :) Oh the taters...well, I was going to pressure can them, but that would mean buying more Mason jars, so we are taking an old trunk we had in the living room and putting it in the basement. I have some mesh bags leftover from when I bought all those green beans and I'll store them in there, in the trunk. Hopefully that'll keep the mice away!

  15. I hope so too Birdie! :) I'm not looking forward to shoveling! :)

  16. Thanks Christine :) The potato harvest was just a treasure! :) I enjoyed the theme for the picnic this week, I had SO many ideas!! :)

  17. Hi Debra :) Oh yes, the new potatoes, love them! I got maybe 25 or so from the harvest so far! :)

  18. Hi Susan (Kane) :) It's so rewarding to pick your own veggies...I wish I'd planted more now but this was my first year experimenting with the tires and I wasn't disappointed! :)

  19. Thanks Susan :) You're so right! Digging for treasure! Every potato I dug up had me ooh-ing and ahh-ing lol! :) We eat lots of potatoes so this was really worth the effort! :)

  20. Hi John :) Yes! You should try! You can grow a small crop in garbage bins, that's how I started! When we finally settle down, there will be at least triple what I planted this year! They really are easy to grow.

  21. Thanks Serena :) Run away little girl indeed! Nothing good can come from exploring that place! :)

  22. Hi Lissa :) Thanks, I like the Bugs one too :)

  23. Thanks TB :) Lots of work and it was worth it! :)

  24. Thanks Lorraine :) You know, I haven't yet tried celery...I'm learning with baby steps about what crops grow best here, but celery is something I really want to try.

  25. Wow...look at those potatoes! AWESOME job. I so love putting a voice with a face and a blog also. I need to back into Michaels challenge of drawing or rating I guess I should say!!! Yep, need to challenge myself to make it a point to do that. I have missed you this summer but I know you have been busy!

  26. LOVE your potato harvest!!! You have such a green thumb! I'm so happy for you. You have worked really hard and deserve a great harvest! I'll keep an eye on that weather prediction..the 19 was extremely hot and partly sunny/clouds but the 21st and 22nd are predicted to be wet and stormy.....love that! Your woods are beautiful and so are your drawings...love the bugs adventure drawing and no, I would not venture into that house! LOL! I have missed you s but it's my own fault....I keep trying to do it all and it just doesn't work for me....duh! LOL!
But I am making progress but my hard work comes when the weather cools off and I can go outside again...there's lots to do out there! When I go North, I am going to get some tires for potatoes for sure!

  27. I've never heard that weather thing, but I'm going to go record today's weather on the calendar so I can check. I sure hope it's not correct. It's supposed to be 90 degrees here (possibly record high). I don't want October to be record anything (except for prettiness). We've had a hot summer, but lots of rain - which has resulted in beautiful green grass all summer and super growing conditions for veggies. Because it's been so lush and green this summer, I'm setting high hopes on having a gloriously colorful and comfortable autumn in a few week's time.

Re: the picture of the girl in the doorway? I'm totally spooked. I'd not be interested in exploring a "haunted" house even on the brightest of days. I've already run far away from the house you've painted. ;^)

  28. Thanks Pam :) I missed you too, I just couldn't find the time to write a proper blog post or be on the computer! But now that the garden, summer and harvest are winding down, I have my "winter" routine back I guess you can call it. :) I would love to see your entries in the picnic...you can do photography too, any creative medium, it doesn't have to be a drawing or a painting! Michael mentioned on an Instagram post that it can be knitting, felted projects...any creative medium...and you are DEFINITELY creative Pam! :)

  29. Thanks Sam :)) I'm so pleased with the potatoes! I still have 4 sets of tires to go, but it started raining and it's heavy work to go for a potato hunt in wet soil lol...I'll wait probably until next week to finish up. I'm hoping for another 100+! :) I know how you feel about trying to do it all...it's hard because my motivation is there, but I don't have the time...and sometimes the energy. :) We'll be back to "normal" (winter normal!) soon enough! :)xx Oh the potatoes are SO easy Sam, when you're up north, definitely it'll be a great crop to grow!! And the tires are free...any garage wants to get rid of them because they have to pay a recycling fee to drop them off. If they can avoid that, they usually say "take all you want"!!!

  30. Hi Becki :) I hope you have a very pretty autumn :) I think ours will be the usual, rainy (snowy) and sunny...all mixed up...then doom and gloom for November and back-breaking shoveling until April lol...It's usually that way. I'm with you, I wouldn't venture into that house...she's brave enough to be at the doorway! :)

  31. Wow, that's a lot of potato, Rain! Way to go though and yes, improving the pH balance in your soil will definitely help.

I love your creepy girl painting! It totally gets me excited for Inktober...which I hope you consider doing with me this year too? I just put up a post about that and for now, we are going to go back to every two weeks for the picnics. Sorry, I know you like weekly as do many of you so it was a hard call but, realistically, with the holidays, one more move and a drive back to Colorado, it would be hard to consistently contribute weekly right now.

Your bugs bunny one is a hoot too. Perfect. So good seeing these again. you are on a roll already! Woot. Than you so much.

  32. Hi Rain, Congratulations on growing all those potatoes!! Nancy

  33. Well, the 19th was hot and dry, and the next two days are predicted to be the same! Not sure if I want the same for October, November, and December, LOL. Your potatoes turned out really well!

  34. What a wonderful, potato harvest you had. We love russets here and use a lot of butter, LOL.

  35. Rain,

I'm exploring all the participant bloggers' artwork for this week's Scribble challenge. I hope to join the Picnickers at some point. I'm not sure if I'm in the league as y'all but this might be just what I need to push myself a bit in my somewhat newly discovered hobby.

I like both pieces of art you shared. Bugs might be my favorite. Thanks for sharing it's a delight to meet you. Have a blessed weekend!

  36. Thanks Michael :) Yes! Inktober...though I will put my own spin on it as you know! :) Every two weeks for the picnic is okay with me. I may just keep painting and drawing every week anyway :) Oh I still have a lot to learn about gardening...each crop has its own little picky behaviour lol!

  37. Thanks Nancy! I am so pleased with the taters!! :)

  38. Thanks Leigh :) The potatoes are awesome! We're already eating them :) My goal was not to have to buy any this winter!

  39. Hi Stefanie :) OH yes, butter is a MUST!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Cathy :) Thanks for dropping by! I hope you join the picnic, it's a lot of fun :) Trust me, I'm not in any league compared to Michael's talent!! Since I started the picnic each week (and now it'll be each 2 weeks), I've started many drawing and art challenges through Instagram and my skills are definitely improving, I'm so glad I pushed myself because it's been a daily hobby I'm so much enjoying now! Nice to meet you too! :)

  43. Dear Rain i don't think this is a good idea to get inside as you are at great success to make it scary hunted house!

LOVED the bugs ,so cute and wonderfully reduced the terror of first painting lol

enjoy you walking in forest before snow as this is blessing

    amazing harvest!
    hugs!

  44. So... warm for October (meh!), cold for November and cold and wet for December.

  45. Love the Bugs Bunny pic! You must have been reading my mind because I've been on a potato kick lately too, and was getting ready to try a new recipe, when I realized I had zero potatoes! So I need to come out that way to grab a few for my dinner.(lol) That's a lot of great work there! Hugs...RO

  46. Sorry I'm late here Rain - as usual I was away EXPLORING again!
Unlike your girl, I don't hesitate to go out the door to see a new place, however must admit it's getting a little harder now I'm older!!! I did enjoy time with Michael - he is such a fun guy.

See you've been busy - amazing me as always.
    Hugs - Mary

  47. Hi Baili :) I think I agree with you...I would just turn around and run the other way lol! :) Thanks, hugs to you! :)

  48. Hi Guillaume :) Warm October is okay with me as long as it's sunny during the day and cool at night to sleep!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thanks RO :) Oh the potatoes....I love them so...can't part with one, sorry, you're out of luck! :)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Mary :) Yes, you would go in and explore that house wouldn't you? Just wear your sneakers so you can run out quick...just in case! ;) Better late than never right? :)

  51. I'm also feeding a pretty intense potato obsession. I wish I would've had the foresight to try growing them this year. I really love the watercolor scribble...perfect for a month of horror movies!:) I especially love the shadow off to the side of the girl in the doorway. It's so fun to read the Farmer's Almanac predictions. Unfortunately, the weather on those days was sunny and very warm, so I'm not sure it will hold true for Pittsburgh. I guess we'll see though!:)

  52. I bet you have a lot of different recipes for all those potatoes. You have me thinking of planting some next year.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hi Rachel :) Growing potatoes is super easy, though I don't know how you'll find time to do it next spring!!! :) Thanks for your comment, I hope all is well with you and your "boys"!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Starting Over :) I have so many potato recipes, I even have a potato cookbook!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  55. It's.so.cool that you counted your potatoes ... i got quite a good harvest myself but I wouldnt have a clue how many I actually got.
The smell in the woods on a fall day ... is one of my most favourite smells :)
