😈 Thursday Art Date: Supernatural 😈

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Supernatural.

All of my Supernatural artwork today is dedicated to the 1980 movie The Shining (based on Stephen King's horror novel): "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future." (IMDB)

Bugs Bunny is recreating the eerie scene in the movie when little Danny is riding his big wheel through the hotel and suddenly comes upon these ghostly twin sisters!

My ink and graphite piece is based on the scene with Shelley Duvall where she is trying to escape her husband's ax-wielding insanity. Shelley Duvall's terrified facial expressions were perfect in this movie!

I did a quick watercolour of the scene where Jack Nicholson is in full blown insanity...chasing his son in a large maze, with an ax in his hands!

This is my favourite medium lately...white charcoal on black paper. Here is the crazy man himself, Jack Nicholson! If you have a chance and a bit of courage, why not check out that movie this month? I'll be watching it!

This last week we celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving with my Thanksgiving Poutine

I love this dish, it's decadent! It's fries with melted Mozzarella and Cheddar topped with all of our traditional Thanksgiving food: mashed potatoes, cauliflower gratin, cranberry sauce, bread stuffing and gravy!

I also made a delicious Chocolate Ganache Pumpkin Tart for dessert. It was very good!

It's been a cheesy week! I made a Cheddar that will be ready in 6 months and my Cams have developed their beautiful white bloomy mould so I was able to wrap them - they'll be ready for Halloween!

Here are my lovely critters on a walk in the woods...Jack always has his eyes on me! :)

Today I'm linking up with some lovely bloggers, please visit them for some very fun and interesting posts!

  1. I love love love your art and tribute to "The Shinning" It's a favorite in this house hold. You did a great job in every piece. Ohhhh cheese and more cheese. That dinner is fabulous especially the pie. The dogs look happy. Hope you are settling down a bit and getting some rest between jobs. Enjoy your evening.

  2. Oh Rain, you draw so well, I knew exactly what movie you were referencing before I even saw your words or descriptions. These are all simply stunning and incredible. I am in awe of your drawing skills.

Looks like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Very traditional meal much like one I would fix, too. I've never had Poutine, but it sounds out of this world and fits nicely with my vegetarian diet. I never expected to come here hungry, so this was unusual. When I saw that dessert, I about flipped. I want to eat the whole thing, possibly in one sitting (grin). I look forward to seeing the recipe, too.

Your cheeses look wonderful and the dogs look so happy to be out in the autumn air. Thanks for hosting this weekly event, dear.

  3. I've never seen The Shining, but that picture is so classic I found myself laughing with delight at your version with Bugs. That said, I rolled quickly through the rest of the pictures as I am not into horror and I can tell I'm going to have at least one of the images in my brain longer than want now. lol

I mean this next part with all respect, but with a does of humor: I really don't know what to think of your Thanksgiving Poultine, Rain. I have no doubt it was decadent. But was it good?

  4. Lots of wonderful scary pieces Rain and the food looks fantastic!

  7. They're all cool drawings, even if I don't like anything scary. But I think your food is fantastic, o the cheese, I love it. Great dishes what you have served again.
The dog gang sitting in the foliage like cute while walking!
Have a good week, hug Elke

  8. I don't do horror so haven't (and won't) seen the movie.
Blown away by your art, and licking my lips (and perhaps drooling) at your food.

  9. The moment I saw your first drawing I knew it was from The Shining. I saw that movie when it first came out. I went with a group of friends and we were ALL jumpy when we came out. I wouldn't see it again but would recommend done watch it iv they haven't before. I tend to skip most horror movies. Your Thanksgiving dinner looks delicious. I usually take a photo of kind but forgot to this year.

  10. Never seen the movie. So can´t really adress it. My favorite art is the image of JN in charcoal.
As for the cheese. I have made a few earlier in life but in later years I developed allergy to milk. So almost no cheese in my menues :( But rarely I cheat a bit :)

    Take care.

  11. your jack nicholson black and white is very good, I loved The Shining as a book, Stephen King books are so good. I am feeling very into the Season. On the subject of supernatural, I work in a call centre and lately some of the callers have mentioned premonitions, etc., spooky!

  15. Your illustrations for The Shining are great. I recognized the iconic twins at the end of the hall right away. I haven't seen the film but I did read the book.

  18. Rain,

We watched The Shining for the first time last year. I thought it was a little strange and didn't get the appeal of this movie. I like your Bugs "The Shinning" recreated scene. Your ink sketch of Shelley Duvall is great capturing the terror on her face. Incidentally the hotel they used in that movie, isn't it located somewhere in Canada? We read a little about it last year. It's awesome stately old hotel. Great direction for this week's theme!

Your meal isn't scary at all. In fact, it's very inviting. I hear every morsel calling my name over and over. :) I'm looking forward to our Thanksgiving meal next month. I love the holidays!

Thanks for hosting and inspiring us each week, my friend. Oh yeah,we'll be on vacation for the next couple of weeks. I know I have one post done but not quite sure if I'll get my last one up in time or not. Stay safe and be well, dear friend!

  19. Your artwork is so good. I can't watch scary movies...I get too nervous! LOL! Suspense is not my friend. LOve the picture of the "critters" and that is so cute how Jack adores you so. YOur Poutine looks so good and Happy belated Thanksgiving!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Your supernatural art is outstanding! And Thanksgiving poutine? GENIUS!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Those drawings scare me. But, your meal for Thanksgiving looks very attractive.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I loved reading The Shining. Seeing the movie was a major plus. It's not just the supernatural feeling in the movie it's how insanity can change a person in the blink of an eye.
I think Jack is conveying a message to you. "Mom, why do we have to take these two yahoos on our walk?"

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ohhhh ... the Shining! It makes my skin crawl just thinking of it. I don't think I could sit through it again because it is the all time scariest movie and my little ol' heart probably couldn't take it. But your renditions of the key scary parts are perfect. You are getting so good at different types of media. My fav is the white pastel on black paper. I have done that and love the results. So Happy Thanksgiving a bit late. Looks to me like you had an awesome dinner ... and your cheese!!! You should go into business. I bet you could make enough to do all of the fixing you want to do on your house. Anyway, as usual ... you killed it!! (Good expression for this post, don't you think :)

  25. I can see that Thanksgiving dinner was a real low cal affair in your house!

  26. Poor Bugs. A shining tribute to The Shining. The original is so much better than the remake.

  27. What a great post, loved all of your art.
Your food looks wonderful, especially the Chocolate Ganache Pumpkin Tart, such a nice dessert.

    Keep well, enjoy your week.

    All the best Jan

  28. I watched The Shining as a kid; freaked me out. I can't watch horror. My mama was preggers with me when she was forced to watch The Exorcist. I think this is why I can't watch horror movies or read horror books.
Your cheeses look beautiful. I am craving cheese now. Love seeing your doggies.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I've never seen The Shining. Does he arrive crazy or go crazy once there? How does it end? Please don't make me look.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Do u ever still buy cheese ?? Or do u make enough to last you two ? I wonder if u can even stomachbstore bought after all those wonderful cheeses.
I love the shining. One of my favorite spooky movies. I love Jack Nicholson. Such a great actor.
    Your poutine sounds so good.
We're suppose to get snow this weekend, sis 😖

    ReplyDelete
  31. ...the Poutine looks delicious.

  32. Snow Ghost ???... Yikes!!!! Love your chees pics!!! We are still buttoning up the garden here on the ridge, but soon... cheese making is a coming!!!! Great art, Rain!

  33. It really is a very creepy film and you've brought those scenes to life very cleverly. Love the one of him heading into the maze - so atmospheric. And I'm relieved that you lightened the mood with Bugs Bunny in the one with the girls in the corridor - that's just too eerie for words otherwise!! Happy PPF!

  34. Thank you Friends! I've updated the post with the tart recipe!!

Just to answer a few questions:

Becki the poutine was FABULOUS...all of those flavours mix so well together with gravy and the melted cheese...perfection! :)

I threw my calorie counter out the door a LONG time ago David lol! ;)

Sandi...he goes crazy while there, just to ease your mind, Jack's insanity doesn't end with a murdered family!!

Sis, the only cheese I buy now is anything I need to melt. Because I still can't get my hands on non-homogenized milk, my cheeses don't melt well - except the Cams, they melt awesomely! So I buy Mozzarella and whatever cheeses I use in our fondues. And yes, you're right, I can't even stomach the grocery store cheeses anymore. I need to buy specialty stuff and it's $$$. So once I can find non-homogenized, I likely won't be buying cheese anymore, can't wait for that day! :) Snow??? EEEEEK! That's scarier than The Shining!

  35. I’ve never watched “The Shining.” I’m too much of chicken, I reckon.
Wonderful artwork. I really like the Shelly Duvall piece.
    Tasty looking dinner, Rain.
    Happy PPF!

  37. I want to dive into your cheese! And the poutine is inspired! Love the dogs and the art! Here in the US we have Bugs Bunny stamps and every time I use one, I think of you!

  39. Your supernatural artworks are scary and spot on. I hope Bugs version of The Shining is a a lot less scary. The food looks delicious and your critters look very happy. Happy PPF!

  44. Loving your artwork, Rain! And oh my goodness, all that amazing food. The Thanksgiving poutine looks especially delicious!

    ReplyDelete
  45. The Thanksgiving Poutine looks interesting, and the pumpkin tart sounds so delicious. My Thanksgiving is never traditional either. It is usually something Italian, like Veal Marsala; and desert is usually apple pie or something with gingerbread. The white on black pastel drawing is very effective, and done really well. Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a lovely comment.

  46. My goodness, my goodness...do I ever LOVE your Jack Nicholson work. That is beyond awesome. And of course, your dogs are wonderful. Plus, your thanksgiving meal looks mighty tasty.

  50. Inhave never seen The Shining film and never plan to do so, Rain, but your drawings looked scary enough to me. What was scary delicious was that Thanksgiving poutine and the dessert. What a great looking combo and those new cheeses looked great. Can I bring the crackers and wine?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rain - your art was scary enough for me; I don't need to go back and watch the movie! And then my heart did a different type of stopping when I saw that poutine. Decadent doesn't begin to cover it! Thanks for linking up to Mosaic Monday!!!

  55. Hello Rain
I enjoyed seeing your Halloween theme scary drawings, especially since The Shining was written by Stephen King after he had a haunted experience during a stay in the Stanley Hotel in Colorado! My husband and I also stayed in that hotel for an anniversary and we also "saw a ghost"!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh my, I have never been able to make myself look at the Shining, and after seeing the pics I don't think I'm going to change my mind ;-) Although I love Jack Nicholson, I think I might have nightmares for weeks... I love your versions of the pictures. And Jack ... how cute he is ♥

    ReplyDelete
  57. Loved the Shinning...A true scary one..Jack Nicholson was great..I don't think I want to see it again though..Love your art work depicting the characters..I guess I'm just not in to scary any more..
    Cute Pups..
Your cheese looks wonderful..I love cheese but just went on a diet..Cheese is kinda frowned upon..
    Have a good week..

    Lovely evening to you.

  59. You have amazing art work to look at! Love the snow ghost! Your food pics are wonderful! Thank you for stopping by my blog!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Oh man, the snow ghost was the scariest thing in this whole scary post...I wouldn’t want to meet her! The Shining just isn’t quite as scary since its Bugs Bunny this time. We know he always comes out OK in the end! Your drawings are great. And really that movie is perfect for Halloween. Yikes. I read somewhere (quite a while back) that Shelly Duvall pretty much had a complete nervous breakdown over filming those scenes. I could believe that.

    ReplyDelete
  61. And oh forgot to say your cheeses made my mouth water! Yummmm... how wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  62. My memory must be seriously messing with me because I seriously thought I came over to visit before today!(lol) I came over to get a piece of pie, please (lol) and to admire your artwork. Hugs, RO

    ReplyDelete
  63. You are an amazing artist...and suxh an amazing cook...and cheese maker. Is there anything you can't do? :) Your dogs are so sweet. I love how Jack keeps his eyes on you. I would love to give him a big hug. Sorry I've missed you lately.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Thanks lovely friends! :)
    To answer a few questions:

Cathy: I read that the exterior shots of the hotel in The Shining were shot in Oregon. Apparently the interior was a set based on a hotel in California (according to Wikipedia). If it were in Canada, I'd be there visiting for sure! :)

Dorothy: Please bring two bottles of wine! :)
