Thursday Art Date: Miniature
Hello Friends!! 😊😊
Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Miniature. Poor Wile E. Coyote thought for sure this time he'd be able to catch the Road Runner! But alas...he didn't read that miniature fine print on the tonic bottle! I hate that fine print!!!

This week I'm sharing some photos instead of drawings. I took a little road trip to the Fundy Bay this week. I visited the Hopewell Rocks on Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick. It's just over an hour's drive away. The Rocks are also called the Flower Pot Rocks. I felt like a miniature pebble in a great expanse of rock and water, so I think I can squeeze by and say this fits the theme! 😁
The tides are claimed to be the highest in the world. Twice daily you can walk the "ocean floor" for about 4-5 hours, then twice more daily, the tides come in up to 42 feet and cover the entire beach area. You have to skedaddle to higher ground once the tide really gets close! I was there during low tide.
Here's a little video of the tide coming in. I stood on a stone about 10 feet from the waves and within 10 minutes, I had to move back!
The tides have carved out beautiful formations, cliffs and coves along this side of the Fundy Bay.
The enormous piles of seaweed are spectacular.
There are lots of faces carved into the cliffs and rocks! Here are some more photos:
I took the opportunity to collect some beautiful stones. They are all so smooth with such frequent contact with the tides.
The Fundy Bay is a magical place for me. I love being here, the last time I visited was 2010 and I'm so happy to be living so close now! I'll be back often now that the park has reopened!
The Hopewell Rocks is an annual nesting ground for the Peregrine Falcon. There is a sign before you enter the lookout, saying to tread lightly and keep your voice down so as not to disturb them. This is the first time (of maybe a dozen times) that I have seen one when I visit this lookout! Very lucky! These birds were on the endangered list in the 1970's, at the brink of extinction. With careful pesticide control and a relocation program, they were considered "not at risk" in the late 2010's!
Maybe my birding friends can help me out here. I'm guessing this is an adult female, because she has a beige neck/throat around her "sideburns"; and her feathering is "barred and spotted" (from my Field Guide To The Birds Of East Of The Rockies - Thanks again Phil!)
Walking Jack and Charlie at sunrise. The sound of distant coyotes yipping got their attention in the second photo! The entire family (human and fur) is doing fine as I type this!
Nothing miniature about this garlic scape harvest! I harvested 67 of them yesterday which means I will have 67 heads of garlic to harvest, cure and store in about a month's time! I'm going to save some of the heads to plant in the fall, so hopefully I will never have to buy garlic bulbs again for planting. Self-sufficiency! 😊

Fantastic pictures of the peregrine falcon! When I was young, one of my favourite books was called, "My Side of the Mountain" about a boy who lives by himself in the Catskills Mountains and has a trained peregrine falcon to hunt for him. I've loved them ever since! Those Fundy tides are remarkable. -Jenn
Wow great photos and happy Canada Day! I really miss the coast sometimes, need to get over to Oregon at some point. We're actually opening to go East into Wyoming this fall, never been there. Glad you're getting a great garlic Harvest!

What a rocky landscape and these little stones that you found. I'm excited. How exciting the Peregrine Falcon you saw, great photos and that definitely fits the topic ... I've never seen this garlic green like that, it's great that you have a lot for the months.

Hi Rain. I love places like this and can walk there for hours. We have something like it in Sweden but to go there I have to drive 7 hours. :( Love the Peregrine falcon as well. Good to know it is not endangered anymore. Nice shots.

A lovely trip to the Bay of Fundy, an area I hope to visit as soon as travel opens up fully. Congratulations on seeing the Peregrine Falcon, an impressive bird that always leaves me in awe. I'm thinking that could be a juvie female Peregrine as the feathers are still quite light. As I do annually - an addiction of sorts - I watched four being raised in New Hampshire at a location on the 13-story building where Bob worked years ago! This year the parents (same pair for the past 6 years) raised them with such love and care and all four fledged about two weeks ago - one female, four males, all healthy and so beautiful to watch. They are such gorgeous birds.

We visited the Hopewell Rocks when we were down in the Maritimes a few years ago. SO awesome! You found a handful of truly beautiful little rocks as souvenirs. And may I say, that's a fab photo of you, Rain!
Oh LOL! Poor Wile E., he did himself in once again. I love your sense of humor, Rain. This is awesome. I really love your pictures of Homewell Rocks. I see a little bear sitting in that first picture and of course there are faces carved out by the rocks. What a beautiful, peaceful place ... you are lucky to be so close. And, by the way, the picture of you is gorgeous ... I mean really gorgeous. As for your Peregrine ... it could be the male or the female sitting on the nest as the coloring of both is the same. The only way you can distinguish them is to see them together and then you will note that the female is considerable larger than the male :) It is, in fact that way with most raptors. The sound of coyotes would have caught my attention too ... it always sends a shiver down my spine. It is fairly certain that they wouldn't approach with a human on the scene, but, I never want to second guess them ... if hungry enough :( I don't think I have ever seen a garlic plant ... how cool they are and how awesome that you are growing your own. You are a real pioneer, Rain ... glad to see those pink, happy cheeks and smiling face.
Belated Canada 🇨🇦 Day wishes to you, Rain, as we prepare to celebrate our 🇺🇸💥holiday weekend here in the US, and a soggy one here in NH to start. Thanks for sharing these photos of not onky your trip to the Bay of Fundy but one of yourself too. A day trip is always a great way to lift your spirits and certainly this one seemed to do that for you. The photos of the peregrine falcon were impressive too and how fortunate to have captured them on your visit. Also, liked your headgear as I have something very similar😀

Thanks TB! :) I used my zoom lens for the falcon, I was about 30 feet away from her...she just kept staring at me. I think we were both very fascinated by each other! :)

Thanks Elke! :) I'm thinking about what I can do with all of those stones! The garlic scapes are the flowers of the garlic plant before they bloom, and they taste like mild versions of garlic cloves, very delicious! I'm lucky to have harvested them, and very surprised at how well they grew this year!

Thanks Andrea! :)) Interesting about the size of the raptor. I was really trying to look all around to see if there were any others in the area, and that was the only bird. Next time I visit, I'll stay a little longer to see if more birds appear. There were SO MANY faces in all of the cliffs and rocks...I spent hours just looking at them! The coyotes around here stay away from the humans. I feel quite safe with my pack AND my pepper spray! Though sometimes their yips and howls are quite haunting! :)

I'll have to show this to Rick. He said one of his best rides was cycling around the Bay of Fundy. He didn't take photos, though, so now I know what he was seeing and I can see why! It looks like a wonderful spot.

I didn't know of fundy bay and it seems very scary with such high water levels when the tide comes in, you would really have to pay attention walking around there! I would be scared. Like you, I pick up stones on the beach, they have feeling/history and I have a pot of them at home, no idea what for! Not painting at the moment, too busy with work but miniature things happened here today, I transplanted my teeny little lettuce seedlings into pots (this is an outdoorsy garden table top lettuce growing venture so all very small but great for cutting salad leaf) Betty x

Good to read the fur babies are doing well, i'm on Freya walking duties this week dodging the squirrels and pigeons she loves to chase. Hello Rain. What an amazing place that Fundy Bay. We get high tides but nothing like those. I'm amazed you got so close to a Peregrine. Probably helped by the location, relatively few people that might cause the birds harm? And of course the fact that your pictures are of a fresh juvenile yet to realise that humans are best avoided.

Thanks Betty! :) There are rangers in the park who actually come down to the beach area and make sure people are gone when the tide starts to really come in fast! I envy your lettuce growing! I used to grow lettuce in my window year round and always had baby lettuce...I need to start doing that again! :)

Thanks Phil! :) The Peregrine was a good 30 feet away, I had my zoom lens out. The lookout in that area of the park is very remote and when I was there anyway, there was nobody else. So it's a juvenile, thank you for that information! I wish there were a few of them together to compare sizes. Oh and tell Sue, I'll bring the gin for that Giant Tonic! LOL...that made me laugh! :)
Your art is amazing and so is Fundy Bay! Thanks for the recipe on toasting pita chips. When I worked for a big telecommunications company we had Peregrine Falcons on the roof with a webcam. We had a very tall building which they liked. They raised their young there for many years. It was during that time when they were endangered. WOnderful scapes! The flower photo is beautiful!

So many things to say and so little time in which to say them, but your photos make me want to take a trip right up there! You have some spectacular scenery to admire. I remember a trip with an ex and five children up that way, and I'll always wish I could've focused more on the surroundings than yelling at children, roadside van breakdowns, and an irritable ex. Maybe one day... Thanks for sharing these wonderful pix.
Loving all your minatures! Love the sound of the water. That always makes me smile and makes me just feel good all over. I would enjoy being close to the ocean so that I could just hop in the car and head that way when I needed a pick me up....but from where I am, the ocean sound is seven plus hours away. Glad to hear that everyone and all the furs are doing well. I am still kicking and my furs are awesome, all three of them.

I absolutely loved seeing the Bay of Fundy and the beach around it! Wonderful. I have read about it, but this is the first "real person"** visit I've seen and your photos and words are great. (** Of course I'm sure the people who write travel books and guides are REAL too, but not real to me the way fellow bloggers are.) How I'd love to visit there. We saw a place in Alaska famous for high tides (name of the place escapes me) but we heard there that "yours" was even better!! Happy all are well and as always admiring your art! As I do annually - an addiction of sorts - I watched four being raised in New Hampshire at a location on the 13-story building where Bob worked years ago! This year the parents (same pair for the past 6 years) raised them with such love and care and all four fledged about two weeks ago - one female, four males, all healthy and so beautiful to watch. They are such gorgeous birds.

ReplyDeleteOh LOL! Poor Wile E., he did himself in once again. I love your sense of humor, Rain. This is awesome. I really love your pictures of Homewell Rocks. I see a little bear sitting in that first picture and of course there are faces carved out by the rocks. What a beautiful, peaceful place ... you are lucky to be so close. And, by the way, the picture of you is gorgeous ... I mean really gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteAs for your Peregrine ... it could be the male or the female sitting on the nest as the coloring of both is the same. The only way you can distinguish them is to see them together and then you will note that the female is considerable larger than the male :) It is, in fact that way with most raptors.
The sound of coyotes would have caught my attention too ... it always sends a shiver down my spine. It is fairly certain that they wouldn't approach with a human on the scene, but, I never want to second guess them ... if hungry enough :(
I don't think I have ever seen a garlic plant ... how cool they are and how awesome that you are growing your own. You are a real pioneer, Rain ... glad to see those pink, happy cheeks and smiling face.

Thanks for sharing these photos of not onky your trip to the Bay of Fundy but one of yourself too. A day trip is always a great way to lift your spirits and certainly this one seemed to do that for you. The photos of the peregrine falcon were impressive too and how fortunate to have captured them on your visit. Also, liked your headgear as I have something very similar😀

The garlic scapes are the flowers of the garlic plant before they bloom, and they taste like mild versions of garlic cloves, very delicious! I'm lucky to have harvested them, and very surprised at how well they grew this year!

ReplyDeleteThanks Andrea! :)) Interesting about the size of the raptor. I was really trying to look all around to see if there were any others in the area, and that was the only bird. Next time I visit, I'll stay a little longer to see if more birds appear. There were SO MANY faces in all of the cliffs and rocks...I spent hours just looking at them! The coyotes around here stay away from the humans. I feel quite safe with my pack AND my pepper spray! Though sometimes their yips and howls are quite haunting! :)

I didn't know of fundy bay and it seems very scary with such high water levels when the tide comes in, you would really have to pay attention walking around there! I would be scared. Like you, I pick up stones on the beach, they have feeling/history and I have a pot of them at home, no idea what for! Not painting at the moment, too busy with work but miniature things happened here today, I transplanted my teeny little lettuce seedlings into pots (this is an outdoorsy garden table top lettuce growing venture so all very small but great for cutting salad leaf) Betty x

Good to read the fur babies are doing well, i'm on Freya walking duties this week dodging the squirrels and pigeons she loves to chase. Look at all that garlic, I have 7 out of 9 planted in my tiny tiny garden, the scapes will make great pesto.

ReplyDeleteHello Rain. What an amazing place that Fundy Bay. We get high tides but nothing like those. I'm amazed you got so close to a Peregrine. Probably helped by the location, relatively few people that might cause the birds harm? And of course the fact that your pictures are of a fresh juvenile yet to realise that humans are best avoided.

I envy your lettuce growing! I used to grow lettuce in my window year round and always had baby lettuce...I need to start doing that again! :)

ReplyDeleteThanks Phil! :) The Peregrine was a good 30 feet away, I had my zoom lens out. The lookout in that area of the park is very remote and when I was there anyway, there was nobody else. So it's a juvenile, thank you for that information! I wish there were a few of them together to compare sizes. Oh and tell Sue, I'll bring the gin for that Giant Tonic! LOL...that made me laugh! :)

When I worked for a big telecommunications company we had Peregrine Falcons on the roof with a webcam. We had a very tall building which they liked. They raised their young there for many years. It was during that time when they were endangered. WOnderful scapes! The flower photo is beautiful!

ReplyDeleteSo many things to say and so little time in which to say them, but your photos make me want to take a trip right up there! You have some spectacular scenery to admire. I remember a trip with an ex and five children up that way, and I'll always wish I could've focused more on the surroundings than yelling at children, roadside van breakdowns, and an irritable ex. Maybe one day... Thanks for sharing these wonderful pix.

I would enjoy being close to the ocean so that I could just hop in the car and head that way when I needed a pick me up....but from where I am, the ocean sound is seven plus hours away. Glad to hear that everyone and all the furs are doing well. I am still kicking and my furs are awesome, all three of them.

I have read about it, but this is the first "real person"** visit I've seen and your photos and words are great. (** Of course I'm sure the people who write travel books and guides are REAL too, but not real to me the way fellow bloggers are.) How I'd love to visit there. We saw a place in Alaska famous for high tides (name of the place escapes me) but we heard there that "yours" was even better!! Happy all are well and as always admiring your art!
