Rest In Peace My Sweet Charlie Girl

We had to say goodbye to our sweet girl Charlie yesterday. The diagnosis was not good - likely a slipped disc in her neck. This required a CAT scan, a spinal tap, a high likelihood of neck surgery, hospital stays and rehabilitation. Because neck surgery in animals is so delicate and dangerous, it would have had to get done at a teaching hospital by a specialist. Even if we could have made the trip to Prince Edward Island to the teaching hospital, the estimated cost was about $10,000. How do they expect people to afford this? 💔

A strong dose of morphine didn't even ease my poor little girl's pain. We made the excruciating choice to put her out of her pain. Three beloved babies in less than 5 months, it's impossible to process.

Would anyone like to host the art date for a few weeks? If so, would you send me an email or contact me through the contact form on my right sidebar? I can send you the HTML code for the link widget.

Thanks friends, thanks to all those who sent prayers, healing energy and love. 💙💙

  1. So sorry for the loss you sweet dog. Medical cost is so outrageous. I have two older dogs both closing in on 14 years, so I know I have some sorrow in my future.

  2. Dear Rain, my heart is heavy reading this about sweet Charlie. You were such loving, caring 'parents' always. I can understand how that huge medical cost, with perhaps only a small chance of giving her much longer, would have been so hard for you. . . . . or almost anyone really. Know she had a lovely life with you and is resting pain free in a good place.
Hugs to you dear, stay strong - I'm holding you close in thought.

  5. You gave sweet Charlie girl a wonderful life and then one final gift of love and compassion so she didn't have to suffer any more. But it's always wrenching to lose a beloved companion animal, isn't it. Wishing you heart's ease in time, dear Rain and Alex.

  8. Oh, my Goddess! I'm so o sorry. Charlie will be missed by me too. I love both dogs and cats equally but Charlie was my favorite as well as Marlene. This news just saddens my heart so much. It's just not fair that dogs can't live a human lifetime like us and that it costs so much to have surgery.
I would take the job for your art date but Lupus started kicking my butt last night and I don't know how long it will stay with me right now.

  11. Oh my, I am so sorry to hear about Charlie. It is one of the hardest decisions for a pet owner to make, our pets are family. Charlie had a good life with you and now she is pain free. I wish you much comfort, thinking of happier times with sweet Charlie.

  17. OMgoodness, Rain. What a hard decision. But I totally understand your choice to put her out of her pain and misery, I am SO sorry for you. I could barely believe it. My heart aches reading this about sweet Charlie.
It's one of the hardest decisions for a pet owner to make, we've been through it twice too.
Our dogs were my children to me.

  21. Oh Rain, what heartbreaking news. I'm so, so sorry.

Modern veterinary care can be truly wonderful, but I hear you about cost. We went through that years ago with a cat that had cancer. We went the surgery/chemo route for the first round, but when he went out of remission, the next round of treatments would have been expensive and required the vet to administer them. Rascal hated the trips to the vet, and I couldn't bring myself to put him through that again. I began to realize that we were doing it for us, not for him. In some ways, I think it was easier back in the day when the only option putting them to sleep.

  23. Oh Rain, I'm so deeply sorry. She looks like she was a wonderful companion for many years and I know a part of your heart was left behind when you said goodbye. When we said goodbye to Gypsy, our vet told us, "one of the hardest things we have to do with our pets is make the decision to give them a great gift -- the end of pain and quality of life." It IS hard, as you already know. You've said goodbye too many times in recent months. I'm so sorry.

  26. You made the right decision for your precious girl. An incredibly difficult decision, but the right one.

Veterinarian costs are enormous here too. :(

Big (((Hugs))) to you both. xx ❤️

  27. Oh Damn I knew it. I'm so so sorry, Rain. It would have driven Charlie mad though, you did the right and compassionate thing. PLEASE take care of yourself. Spinal surgeries on any species have very low success rates. I think the cost may a purposeful prohibitor as the odds of it working are so low. I'll be praying for y'all and thinking of you. HUGS! xoxo

  29. Praying for your hurting hearts. We've only had one furbaby at a time, and that was a very long time ago. I can't imagine losing three in five months. Hugs to you and Alex. I hope you can find solace in knowing you loved your Charlie girl well.

  30. I am so sorry for your loss. You did the right thing, I think.
It is so difficult, isn't it?

  31. 2nd Man and I are sending love and light and hugs your direction. We've been through it twice in recent years and it hurts the same every time. When we bring our furry babies into our lives, we know what the end will be but even knowing that wouldn't change a thing. We give love and they return unconditional love.

  32. so sad, hard, and heartbreaking, but I think you made the right choise for all of you.

You are still suffering, but, as you know, Life goes on.
    Take care!

  37. Condolences, Rain, on the loss of Charlie which I was late in learning due to being away. I know how difficult the past few months have been with the loss of several fur-mates. And, how do people pay for such animal surgeries?
