💀 Thursday Art Date: Urban Legends 💀

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Urban Legends. Tweety Bird and Bugs Bunny are re-enacting a very cute version of a popular urban legend: The Tooth Fairy. I remember receiving dimes whenever I lost my baby teeth...I wonder how much The Tooth Fairy leaves kids these days? I recently read a much more sinister version of this legend...I'll spare you the details!! 👀

Note: Starting next Thursday, I'm changing the art date's linky to expire on Fridays at midnight. Please revisit to make sure you don't miss those who join in a little late! Also, if anyone adds a link that has nothing to do with the art date theme, it will be removed!

A Local Urban Legend!!

Legend of the Dangarvon Whooper: A young man took on a job as a cook with a logging company in northern New Brunswick. His only possession was a money belt filled with coins. He was well-liked and whooped as he laughed and made jokes. One night, the boss of the camp killed him and stole his money belt. When the crew woke up, the boss told them that he'd been sick and died overnight. Due to a storm, the loggers couldn't leave the area and had to bury the young cook in a shallow grave in the nearby Dangarvon Woods. To this day, if you walk by those woods, you can hear whooping and screaming from the tormented spirit of the young cook. (Ink and watercolours)

Another fine urban legend is that Twinkies can survive the end of the world...likely because most of their ingredients are non-pronounceable! I got inspiration from the original logo "Twinkie The Kid" and the face from the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters. (Pigment liner pens and graphite)

The Black-Eyed Children: On cold, dark autumn nights, beware as you get into your car. You may hear a scratching at your window from lost children who beg you to drive them home. These are not children, they are evil creatures who are pale with black eyes who intend you great harm. (Black and white charcoal)

Jack and Marlene - Waiting for Supper

A grouse hangs out on my front step every morning - not a great photo, I took it through the window!

This is Trigger. He ran away from a neighbour's home 12 days ago. They rescued him from a bad home and were trying to re-home him when he squirmed his way out of the collar he was wearing. He's a 3-year old Sharpei. He's been roaming the blueberry fields. Alex and I have been out daily trying to find him and bring him home. The SPCA has a live trap set up at an abandoned camp where he was last seen. Fingers crossed we find him! I'd love to keep him if we can find him, but we'll have to see how he gets along with the six other furries first!

OCT 24 UPDATE: WE CAUGHT TRIGGER!!!!! He's currently at a (no-kill) shelter being looked after by a vet and they will find him a good home! 😇😇😇 We realized that it would be too much for us to keep him, plus him and Charlie did NOT get along! Our dogs come first. I know he'll find a loving forever home!

Jack spotting deer in the distance; Charlie looking for deer in the blueberry fields; Charlie, Jack and me looking for Trigger

My 2020 garden was a bust - many factors worked against me, including a late start due to buying a house and moving during Covid; the rock dust that sprayed the garden when we had our well drilled; and a very hot and dry summer. BUT...I managed to harvest about 30 small potatoes and plant my garlic for the spring. I also put my asparagus bed to rest for the winter. I'm not sure I'll do a garden next summer or not...we'll see!

We ate leftover Thanksgiving food for four days! The highlight of this week was this pizza that Alex created: Peach jam and goat cheese on a pita, drizzled with BBQ sauce - it was SO delicious! We're eating from the freezer and pantry this week, I have to do the monthly shopping this weekend.

😈 Thursday Art Date: Supernatural 😈

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Supernatural.

All of my Supernatural artwork today is dedicated to the 1980 movie The Shining (based on Stephen King's horror novel): "A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future." (IMDB)

Bugs Bunny is recreating the eerie scene in the movie when little Danny is riding his big wheel through the hotel and suddenly comes upon these ghostly twin sisters!

My ink and graphite piece is based on the scene with Shelley Duvall where she is trying to escape her husband's ax-wielding insanity. Shelley Duvall's terrified facial expressions were perfect in this movie!

I did a quick watercolour of the scene where Jack Nicholson is in full blown insanity...chasing his son in a large maze, with an ax in his hands!

This is my favourite medium lately...white charcoal on black paper. Here is the crazy man himself, Jack Nicholson! If you have a chance and a bit of courage, why not check out that movie this month? I'll be watching it!

This last week we celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving with my Thanksgiving Poutine

I love this dish, it's decadent! It's fries with melted Mozzarella and Cheddar topped with all of our traditional Thanksgiving food: mashed potatoes, cauliflower gratin, cranberry sauce, bread stuffing and gravy!

I also made a delicious Chocolate Ganache Pumpkin Tart for dessert. It was very good!

It's been a cheesy week! I made a Cheddar that will be ready in 6 months and my Cams have developed their beautiful white bloomy mould so I was able to wrap them - they'll be ready for Halloween!

Here are my lovely critters on a walk in the woods...Jack always has his eyes on me! :)

The Snow Ghost (watercolour): Urban Legend has it that the Snow Ghost appears on snowy nights to travelers who are trapped in snow storms. She leads them astray with her beauty then feeds off their life force. These travelers are never to be found again!

👻 Thursday Art Date: Scarecrows 👻

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Scarecrows. Isn't Tweety Bird cute in his scarecrow costume? He's too adorable to scare away any crows though! 😊 This Monday is Thanksgiving here in Canada and I have a great meal planned! I'll be making my Thanksgiving Poutine - with a special dessert. I'll post about that next Thursday!! I'm SO thankful for everything I have in my life...I am filled with gratitude. 💕💕

This ink/graphite drawing was inspired by the scarecrow in the very spine-tingly-dingly movie Jeepers Creepers. You really don't want to know what's under that hat my friends! My October of horror movies marathon has already started! Such fun! 👀

I'm pretty dang proud of this white charcoal drawing! It's my tribute to the amazing Ray Bolger who played the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. I'm starting to feel like myself again, loving every art medium I can get my hands on!! I drew this while sipping white wine and listening to 80's music, ain't that the life? 😃

Critters:

Four Corners of Fur

LOTS of road trips the last week...not only did my car break down (starter motor) but I also got a flat tire...so two trips to the garage. I brought Jack with me on one of those trips and he really enjoyed seeing the cows at a nearby farm!

Alex and I had an afternoon picnic at the river. We saw so many eagles and on the way home, saw these white-tails. They are so lovely!

October sunsets are stunning!

During one of my road trips, I scored on pumpkins and gourds!

I hired a blacksmith to make a lid for my burn barrel. After my neighbour's house burned down back in August, I've been paranoid about embers flying out of the burn barrel. The blacksmith did an amazing job and only charged me $60 for this lid.

Since we moved in May, my cooking/baking mojo has really been lost...but it's B-A-C-K!!! I made a Pizza-Ghetti the other night, woof...this is filling and delicious!

I'll leave you with this 4-second video of a great dollar store find! I'm in the Halloween spirit alright!

Thursday Art Date: Goblins and Trolls ☠️☠️

Hello Friends, 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Goblins and Trolls. I decided to stick to goblins, they are a little less evil than the trolls out there today! 😊 Poor Daffy, I don't think he's going to get much stress relief with Bugs playing a green goblin today!

My she-goblin isn't very happy, poor gal. I did this with pigment liner pens, graphite pencils and my white acrylic paint pen.

Pumpkin Hobgoblin (watercolours)

I saw an image like this online and wanted to try it out with my watercolours, it was a lot of fun! I'm challenging myself to be a little more loose in my painting. I have a bad habit of needing to fill every space with colour! Sometimes less is more!

I made more cheese the last few weeks. A Colby, another Jarlsberg and some Camemberts. These are the Cams. In about 8 weeks, they'll have formed their bloomy white mould and be ready to eat! Alex and I have been working hard on the house and we got almost all of the tasks completed. We have a few big projects happening this month and I'll update you all about those another time! It's nice to be back!

My sweet furry critters!

We haven't had time for much exploring lately but we're going to try to get out by the river and into the woods this week, hopefully we'll see some wildlife!

Autumn is in full swing here in the Maritimes! The blueberry fields have turned a beautifully stunning red colour and the backyard maples and birch trees are turning as well...

...but the mornings are cold and a layer of frost glazes the fields and plants. My garden was an epic failure by the way, 'nuff said...

I love this time of year! Saturday mornings are perfect to stay in bed and watch cartoons! That's all for now folks! Please check out the link gadget below to see more Goblins and Trolls artwork!
