Hats and Scents

I wanted to show you my Akubra "Tracker" hat! Alex and I buy our hats second hand all the time, always hoping that they are the right size and in the condition claimed. We've been lucky so far. Alex cleaned all of my hats and he had to put some finishing touches on the sizing through steaming and shaping them. I love this hat!

And this is my first hat that we bought in the fall, the Akubra "The Boss" hat - yeah, that suits me lol...I wanted to show you how I put the turkey feathers on it! We still have my western hat to shape and clean up and I'll show y'all that over the weekend! :)

My creepy heads...they hold the hats well, but do you sense a wee bit of menace the way he's looking at me??? 😱 Actually I have to turn the faces to the wall because little Pavlov the shepherd mix always looks at them very trepidatiously as he tiptoes by them!

I got an early birthday present too from Alex. It arrived yesterday. It's an aromatherapy diffuser.

He also got this 6-pack of essential oils. Aromatherapy is wonderful for relaxation and stress-relief and Alex said he wanted me to enjoy this earlier than my birthday to help with the anxiety of late. I'm pretty touched by the thought. :)

My office smells like a spa at the moment! This will be wonderful when I do my yoga and meditation each morning! It's a fun diffuser too, it changes colours and I can't wait to see how it looks like when it's dark. It also acts like a mini-humidifier, so we're going to put it on in the bedroom at night with the eucalyptus oil.

So what are everyone's plans for the New Year, if any? Ours will be the usual cozy quiet with lots of food and drinks! :) And...drum roll...tomorrow we are opening all of the cheeses I made in the summer!!! :)))

  1. New to your blog. Love your hats. I'd say Alex is a keeper, he's very sweet helping you out and giving you pretty gifts.

  2. Where do you find such amazing hats secondhand? They are AWESOME! (and you are, too, you cutie). I love the turkey feathers, too. I believe that creepy head is daring you to remove his/her hat... Can't wait to see how your cheeses came out - my typical NYEve is some nicer wine, homemade calamari, a DVD and dogs/cat! Perfection. I am going to try to stay up to midnight so that I can metaphorically boot 2017 out the door. I am visualizing a magical year for 2018!

  3. Hi Latane :) Lovely to see you! :) Thank you for your comment, I agree that I have a keeper in Alex :)

  4. Hi Susan :) Thank you :)) The hats...well, here in Canada we have a site called Kijiji (is it in the U.S.?) It's basically a somewhat secure want ads section of a virtual newspaper so to speak. People can advertise for free but you have to be careful. We get local hats that way. Or we go on Etsy which surprisingly has lots of great hats. Most are overpriced though, but Alex is a genius at getting a bargain so I usually leave all of that up to him! The turkey feathers are so pretty, part of my Christmas gift :)

Yum! Calamari!! I've never attempted that one yet! But I'd love to because the store bought stuff is always so chewy. I think that your New Year's Eve sounds wonderful! I will update next year (lol, always makes me laugh when I say that so close to the new year) with my cheese reviews!!! :)

  5. Oh Susan, I laughed so hard at your "creepy head" comment...like a John Wayne movie or something..."I dare you to knock this hat off my head"...

  6. You look great in those hats! I really like the styles.

I love using a diffuser, nearly every day it is going.
    Happy Early birthday to you!

  7. your hats are beautiful and will last a life time,, thats a good thing lol,, I really like the diffusers , I think they are all the rage right now, healthier option than those horrid air sprays,, I have seriously bad asthma, reactive airway disease and I only use essential oils,,I smiled when you said that about the heads and I agree, they are a little creepy, my mum kept a wig on one and I remember thinking it was a little spooky lol,, we will have a quiet New Year,,Best wishes for the best year ever my friend!

  8. Thanks Tammie Lee :) I think I'm officially a hat gal. :) I can't express how touched I was with the diffuser gift. It's useful, it's pretty and it smells great! The benefits (as you know) are many. But really, he got it to help me with my nerves...that's something that really touches my heart. :)

  9. Lol Laurie...so you have mannequin head trauma like me ;) ? They are a bit creepy lol! I'm sorry to hear about your asthma, but my gosh I'm happy your diffuser and essential oils can help. I think that going back to the old ways of healing are so much better for a person. Yes, modern medicine is useful, I've had a broken bone or two where I was happy to be in a cast!! But normally speaking, I'll take the natural route before the "medical" route. So far it's worked wonderfully. I wish you a wonderful year too! I love your watercolour book!!! :)

  11. Oh wow, Rain, you do look beautiful in that hat <3 I love your aromatherapy gifts from Alex, what a lovely man he is <3
I have mannequin heads for when I make hats and they have to live in the cave as they really are freakish, haha.
I hope you have a lovely New Year with so much to look forward to. Lots of love to you dear friend.xxx

  12. Alex is very sweet and very thoughtful. And so are you. Like attracts like :) I love your hats! They suit you so much. What a fun thing to own. But those heads...eeeek...they are handy but they'd freak me out! I'd forget I have them and then one night when I need to go to the bathroom...WHAM...heart attack...LOL

The aromatherapy diffuser is a wonderful gift. I hope all those lovely scents bring you peace and relaxation!

We want to go out to dinner for New Year's but we'll have to see with the weather. It is bitterly cold and I'm not sure I feel like dealing with that. Our other option is to order in and enjoy a quiet evening. We'll see how it plays out.

  13. Hat person here! I love your hats! Good on Alex for giving them such good care. He takes good care of you too!

  14. I buy my essential oils from Escentials of Australia and it can be quite a bargain there for folks shopping from the USA, especially when the USD is high. But not so much for CAD to AUD, rather sadly.

Still the prices are incredible especially when compared with things like doterra etc. EG 500mls of sweet orange for $15.50. A lot of oils are around $15-18 for 100mls, which is what you can often pay in a shop for 12-18mls and they have a huge range. I'm burning them in the Delicate Nirvana as I type this. ;)

Ginger, gingergrass, lemon myrtle and lemon scented ironbark are some of my current favourites, the last two being very Australian. :)

  15. Those hats are truly beautiful and you look so good in them! Love the turkey feathers too! An aromatherapy diffuser sounds wonderful! I may have to get one of those! I do have one in my bedroom but it is really just a mini-humidifier that I put oils in but I imagine it works the same way and mine changes colors too but is a really cheap version. Yours is elegant looking!
Yes, bitter cold predicted starting tonight and through the weekend with freezing drizzle so I will be doing the same as you guys....good food, fire, candles and crafting t.v., and staying indoors! Happy New Year!!!

  16. I am enjoying my free diffuser I obtained about a month ago. I use organic oils to help keep us healthy when we have signs of any illness (sore throat, runny nose, or even headaches). We don't run it on a regular basis, but it has proven to really help with a good night's sleep, and maintaining good health. I had to laugh about the styrofoam heads. I have been looking online to see I could get at least one for my crochet hat/scarf photos (or craft shows). we have only one plan for the New Year's Eve - stay home, hunker down with a drink and movies and snacks maybe.

  17. Rain, your hat totally screams "Boss Girl" and I love it, and your lovely red hair! I'm big into scents and adore essential oils, with Lavender and Peppermint being my faves. What a great way for you to relax a little. Dang it, you do yoga too!?(lol) I got lucky a few weeks back and found some in a store called Big Lots and found some that are authentic. A lot of stores say they are essential oils, but end up not being the real deal. On New Year's Eve I stay in the house where it's safe and I can eat my cheeseburger and a latte.(lol) Hugs and Happy New Year to you, Alex and the puppies! RO

  18. You look so cute in that hat! Most hats do not look good on me. Sounds like you are really planning to enjoy that diffuser. I like a light scent of Lavender or a light scent of roses. Nothing planned for our New Year. The last of the company left today so trying to get caught up. We are under a wind chill adversary. Suppose to be really cold a this coming week! Nancy

  19. We're going out for an early Chinese dinner (4:30) then get some groceries on the way home.

  20. Those hats are soooo sharrrrrrrp!!!! Perfect for you!!!! Alex is a wonderful gift selector. !!!!!

The scents sound heavenly too. This is another area, about which I know nothing. But have an interest in. Voila!!!!! Something else, to explore, in the New Year!!!! :-))))

  21. Hi Joyce :) Congrats to Winnie's first party! I bet she will be the belle of the ball ;) I hope you enjoy your party tomorrow, you go to so much effort with your cooking and prep, I'll enjoy reading about it after you rest up! :)

  22. Hi Yarrow :) Thank you! :)) I think the black one goes great with my hair! lol...so vain...I laughed when you said your mannequin heads were freakish, they really do give off some kind of odd energy, I'm sure it's mostly in my imagination though lol...I hope you have a wonderful new year too! :)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Martha :) That's sweet, thank you! :)) Lol...the heads...I can't get away from them. Even when I turn the faces to the wall, I think that they are somehow looking over their imaginary shoulders at me lol...So far the diffuser is doing wonders...it's SO relaxing, and does such a great job for the dry air in the house too. I think I'd opt for ordering in...it's just too cold out there!!

  24. Thanks Christine, happy new year to you too! :))

  25. Thanks Leigh :) Oh I love that you are a hat person! I think they're wonderful! I have to find a nice gardening hat this year though as I plan to spend much more time in the garden! :)

  26. Hi Snoskred :) Nice to see you! :) I need to find a good oil supplier too, but in Canada because shipping is outrageous these days. Though the Australian dollar and Canadian dollar are pretty much at par, customs fees will kill any savings here! I have the lemongrass going right now and it's wonderful!

  27. Hi Sam I Am! :) ;) Thank you! :) I LOVE the hats...Alex got me a western style hat too, it's in the box for now because he has to steam it gradually to shape it to how I like it. That one will have turkey feathers too! I love the look! :)

I think that your diffuser sounds very much like the one I have! It works very well as a humidifier too and I love those colour changes. I'm sure it works the same way. The fragranced oils are very calming. And if I'm low on energy I just have to drop some peppermint in there and I'll be all set! :) I hope you have a cozy Hygge night tonight and into 2018, I wish you all the best Sam! :) xxx

  28. Hi Kristina :) Hunkering down with a drink, movie and snacks sounds like the perfect New Year's Eve to me! :) We got the heads through Amazon, they were about $4 each but came from overseas so they took forever. We're glad to have them now though. I may have to put masks on them to hide their creepy faces lol...

  29. Hi RO :) You're right about the oils. You have to be careful where you get them. We have a store a few towns over that sells them, but they are very pricy, so I'll be checking out some resources I found in Canada because I seem to be going through the Sweet Orange oil the most! :) Lol, I love that you're having a cheeseburger for New Years, ha ha...start the year off RIGHT!!! :) And thank you! I do love these hats. I used to always wear hats in the 80's and I'm so glad I have some more to wear now! I hope you have a great night tonight dear friend! :)

  30. Hi Nancy :) Thanks! :) We are having frigid weather too, it's unbearable to be outside too long. Cozy at home is all I want these days! I love the scent of lavender too! It's so calming. We actually use it for one of our dogs who has that fear of thunder and loud noises and it helps her. I hope you have a wonderful cozy night! :)

  31. Hi John :) I hope you have a great dinner! I wish we had a Chinese food buffet type of restaurant around here, that would be nice, I bet it'll be packed though. Have a happy new year and an extra egg roll for me! :)

  32. Thanks Wisps of Words :) I am loving the hats, these days I'm never without one! :) It's funny, we both wear our outback hats for dinner now...it's like our "formal" attire with our bathrobes lol...I've mentioned that we live a pajama life so the hats are fancy dress! :) I've used aromatherapy in the past when I really needed help with panic attacks. I saw a Naturopath and she told me to keep a little bottle of orange essential oil in my pocket and just breathe it in when I felt too anxious and I really found it helped. I'm so glad that Alex brought this back into my life because I've been using it the last few days and I am seeing a difference in my ability to relax!!

  33. Hello, Rain. Love the (unusual to me) name! ^_^
First time visiting your blog, nice post. And nice hat, as well! :D

Happy New Year, dear! See you around, hopefully.

  34. I love the hats but I turn to the black most of all. I wear a lot of black, did that even before I gained all my weight years ago. I love my diffuser. Love the oils that help you to relax but I love the ones that have pick up to them also. Rosemary is one that I totally love the scent. Thieves put out by Young Living is amazing also. I love it. Matter of fact, think I need a shot or sniff of my Thieves to pick me up after my nap....yep, I gave into the fatigue today. The cold (freezing here today, and going out messing with my horse) set me back....oh well, great nap.

  35. Hi Hot Guys :) Thanks for visiting! :) I do love those hats a lot! Happy New Year to you too!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi Pam :) I LOVE the fragrance of rosemary...always reminds me of Thanksgiving stuffing! I'm sure if I had that oil going we'd be eating all the time lol...I'm sorry about your fatigue. I guess you have to really listen to what your body needs, especially in the cold!! I'm glad you got out to see your horse, how fun! :)) I actually stopped wearing black back in 1995 when I first got my 2 pugs...the hair was EVERYWHERE...I'm noticing all the pet hair now on my black hat!! Good thing we got those hat brushes as stocking stuffers this year! Hope you're feeling better after your nap. :)

  37. You look fabulous in your new hats which totally look brand new. I love how the cream one has those dapper feathers on the side.
Thank you for your recent visit. It's been so busy prepping for this and that. I'm glad to have some down time this winter break to craft, read, and to catch up on sleep. Mahalo for the new year wishes. A blessed :*:.。.:*(´∀`*)Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!*:.。.:*: to you and yours.

  38. Slowly working my way thru about one million blogs!! Its incredible how much goes on when you are away one week!

Those hats are adorable! I like the feathers - nice touch!

I am now off to find the cheese blog!!!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks Stefanie :)) Those feathers were a gift from Alex, he found a lady who has a turkey farm and she keeps them and sells them. I just love them! I have a whole bag of them so I can change them around on the hats as I change my moods lol! :) I love when you write in Hawaiian because I never see that! Thank you!! :)
