Three "P"'s and a Give Away! :)

"P" #1:  Pavlov has a "mystery allergy" according to the vet. Ugh. Our cat Oscar has the same mystery allergy. It's something in the environment in this rental. We will never be able to pinpoint it, so the solution is that Pavlov is now on allergy pills and so far, his toes are looking better. I switched the cone of shame to Jack's (homemade) boots to give him a break, poor thing. He keeps licking, we have to stop him from doing that to give him a chance to heal.

"P" #2:  PIZZA!!! :) I made a Detroit style pizza the other day and though it was very good, I didn't quite get it the way it should be with the crusty cheese toppling over the sides. I will try again and hopefully have a better report next time! We also had some garlic bread and breaded Mozza (emptying the fridge day!)....does anyone have a BAKED breaded Mozza recipe that actually works? Mine always melt, no matter how long I freeze the cheese first. I think this dish is meant to be deep fried!

"P" #3: Plants. My flowers are really coming up! The chamomile is slow but it's growing! The only hold out is the Marigolds...nothing yet!

There is freezing rain as I type this, wacky weather. The herbs are enjoying life by the window too. I water these every other day and before I go to bed, I put the knitted plant cozies back on them so they stay warm. :) One of the cats nibbled on my "Thyme" label...I had to barricade things even more!

Just this morning the chives burst out of the soil!

Alex got me this cookbook for Christmas. The store sent us two by error and told us to just keep the second one. Is anyone a fan of Dom Deluise? If so, this cookbook is yours for the taking! Just leave a comment if you would like to have it, or send me an email. On my right sidebar, I have an email widget. These are light, mostly Italian style recipes and so far we've had some good meals from this book...plus it's very funny to read.

A question without an answer: Why do the hounds sleep ON TOP of the couch? As you can see, we don't own human couches anymore. :)

  1. Oh your poor critters! A mystery allergy. That sounds scary. What substance is on the wood floors? Any clue? Or are there some rugs around, which could have some 'unknown' substance in them?

Jack's homemade boots are adorable, and must be much less uncomfortable than the cone. Poor thing.......

Can't eat any of those beautiful Italian things you cooked. Since I have to eat G/F, and eat little dairy. So I'm no help on the Mozzarella sticks.

Hooray for all your growing! These wee little pots must make you feel so good, every time you look at them. :-)

Hounds sleep on back of couch. -grin- I have wondered, just what you and Alex sit on! 'Cause doggies are usually sleeping on the furniture.

  2. I wonder what the allergy,, isn't that puzzling,, sometimes things like this go away before we ever nail it down. Your pizza looks wonderful as always,, yum!!!! Your plants are doing wonderfully,, some of the herbs take so long to grow but I have had them last for years in a protected flower bed, south side,, very protected,, parsley, lavender, thyme always came back,, and chives I couldn't kill. Even for how far north we are if I covered them with dry leaves in Fall and uncovered them when the spring came they lasted years and years, I think starting our seeds is the best way to go!! Thank you for sharing with us today Rain, I always enjoy my visit!

  3. What a sweet pup. So sorry he has to deal with allergies. One of my dogs has terrible allergies; we have tried everything. She is on a special food that contains salmon. She does better on that, but still has some problems. I had four dogs at one time, but lost two of them last November. They were all rescue dogs. Yes, I love dogs and would rather be with my dogs than be around most people I know. Jana

  4. So frustrating to have that problem with one of your cats and the pup. Methinks some kind of a natural medicine/salve would be good to try. Unfortunately, I don't know what to recommend. Have you tried to find anything on the Internet? It always amazes me what information is available . . . if one can find it.

Envious of your green and growing pots. Looks like spring time!

I do think dogs like to be up high, if they can manage it. Our Bouvier who loved the cold winter, would find the highest plowed up snow bank in the yard and perch on it all day long. (I think he was surveying his kingdom.)

Don't count me in for the book, although I'm sure it's a good one. Trying so hard to thin out my cook book shelves and you know how many (trillions!) of recipes to try I just found in that big box!!

  5. Sorry for the animal allergies. It is hard when you can pinpoint stuff. LOL...Dakota sleeps on my back cushion too....Bugs me big time since it causes it to sink in, but, I let him do it just the same. 82 was the high temp here in Nashville today. I needed to be in doors doing so much but with the rain and cold yesterday, a pain pill last night, beautiful weather today....I had no get up and go so me and the furbabes vegged out of the deck today. We even napped out there. Rain tonight, storms tomorrow....rain several days to come. OH YAY....The PIZZA looks YUMMY! I had over 1/2 of mine left from last night, I made T take what she had left over home with her. Going to toss mine in the freezer I think for a night when I need a fast meal.

  6. HAHAHA! I love that last photo. The house belongs to the animals and we are their servants. I'm sure you've figured that out by now. LOL

Poor, sweet Pavlov. I hope whatever is bothering him goes away. If only we could explain to these beautiful animals what's going on. It's heartbreaking when something ails them.

PIZZA! My favourite food. Yours looks so yummy. Every time I visit your blog I'm reminded of things I haven't made in ages, pizza being one of them. I really like homemade pizza. It's fun to make and it tastes great.

Wonderful about your plants! These little plants bring joy, especially when we are so desperate for spring to arrive and the world to turn green again. We're getting closer! But not today. Today we have freezing rain, too. Boo...hiss...

That cookbook looks like fun. Count me in for the draw/contest/whatchamacallit...LOL

  8. Hi Rain, good post. I hope tat Pavlov gets better really soon and i’m sure he will. The weather in your part of Canada looks a bit grim at the moment. : ( Hang on in there because the good stuff is around the corner The book giveaway looks very tempting but the cost of sending it will be enormous and i’d rather someone who will really be glad of it receiving it gets it. Still, it’s very generous of you to give it away like that. Your seeds are looking very good so the best of luck and i’m sure they will be a great success.

  9. poor pavlov....the boots are cute though! btw....the detroit pizza crust is supposed to be thick. it's very bread-like.it sure looks good! i tried to winter over herbs but i am bad at keeping plants alive indoors. they aren't looking too good! heavy rain here for days!

  10. Your last picture makes me think of Snoopy, who was a hound dog. He always slept on top of his doghouse. Maybe it's a hound thing? -Jenn

  11. Our beagle "Bailey" likes the upper couch as well and my son's 75 pound golden retriever Millie sometimes tries to lay there too but she is squishing the heck out of the cushions! Lisa

  12. Allergies suck. The good news is that its unlikely to be something from outside (considering the time of year) the bad news is that just normal life can produce a lot of allergens. Good luck.

No clue on the breaded mozz, I'm not a huge fan so I've never tried it.

If I don't post a picture of Apollo and my couches back cushions on my blog soon remind me lol!

  13. Poppy also has a problem with allergies - not to that extent, thankfully. We have not had to give her medicine yet.

  14. My wife has a cat with an allergy. At first we thought it was something we could cure with antibiotics, but it didn't work.

Never thought to that guy as a cook, I thought he was a comedian? Are the recipes good? You never know what hidden talents a person may have.

  15. Hi Rain, I am not interested in the give-a-way book. I am sure someone else will use it much more than I. I love the picture of the dogs on the couch and your plants in pots look great. Good for you. Nancy

  16. That really sucks that no one knows what type of allergy is making your babies miserable, but so glad they have you as a mom to take care of them. Those little booties are so adorable, and look comfy. What a grand pizza meal! Looks like you were in a pizza shop. Kudos on your herbs growing so well. Growing your own sure saves a lot. I actually have that same cookbook too. Hugs....Happy Sunday! RO

  17. I love Dom DeLuise! Could his book make me as good a cook as you??? Although I have to admit I was hoping you were giving away one of your artworks. Lol

I'm impressed your parsley is up so quickly. It's always so very slow to appear when I plant it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Poor Pavlov. I hope the boots work better so he'll heal faster.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Your poor puppy!! I hope he is healed soon and I hope you find out what the allergy is, so all your animals are happy! More food! What am I going to do with you Rain! LOL! Everything looks so good! Happy all your plants are coming up! We've been having strange weather too! Your puppies on the couch make me laugh! LOL! I remember Dom Deluise from Cannonball Run! I love watching the bloopers from that movie! Makes me laugh all the time! Big Hugs!

  20. Hi Wisps of Words :) See, that's the thing...we have wood floors in some areas, ceramic in others, and a stone flooring in the living room. Nothing is consistent...I sweep every day, mop with my Swiffer, but then I've mopped with soapy water before, and also with Pine Sol...it's so hard to figure out what the problem is! Yeah, when Alex and I sit on the couches, we have to squeeze in lol!

  21. Hi Laurie :) I managed to kill my chives this winter! I think it was because I transplanted them too many times poor things. But alas, the chives are poking through the earth so hopefully we'll have some soon! I HATE buying herbs now!! You're right, we do need to start our seeds, last summer I did half and half. The ones I started indoors in April were the ones I had success with!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Jana :) We are the same...I adore my dogs. They are sweet, loving, fun...better than people! :) Sorry you lost two of yours. Ours are all rescues as well. I don't think we'll ever figure out the allergy problem, too many possibilities around here. Jana, do you have a blog?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Mama Pea :) Alex asked me about that, he wondered if we could come up with some kind of salve to put on Pavlov's toes. There is just so much going on...we had another vet emergency I'll write about tomorrow. I need to look into this because I don't want him on those pills long term. They cost $75 a month!!! Granted, our friend is footing the bill for his dog, but my gosh, if it were us, it would be too much to pay! Ha ha ha...I didn't think you'd want the book Mama Pea because of your latest project!!! :)

  24. Hi Pam :) Good idea about the pizza. When I have time, I made freezer pizzas because they really do come in handy! And I can't handle those store bought freezer ones anymore, they just all taste like cardboard to me! Oh the dogs...our couches are SQUISHED down, we dream of having a living room that is closed off and we have nice leather couches, mahogany furniture...but who are we kidding??? We could never lock them out of any room lol! :)

  25. Hi Martha :) LOL...yes! we are the servants, I learned that a LONG time ago. When I was dating before I met Alex, I made sure to put in my profile: "I am a dog person, I love dogs, they live with me as family, they are allowed on beds and couches and I include them in almost every aspect of my life. If you are not a dog person, please don't contact me!". I'm going to take Mama Pea's advice and do some research on salves or something that might help Pavlov after the 3 week treatment of the pills is done. You are counted into the draw! Actually as I type this, I already picked a winner through the number generator! :) I'm so late replying to comments!!

  26. LOL Me too Jenn! :) And Pinot Noir lol! :)

  27. Thanks Christine :) I'm so happy to see some green growing!

  28. Hi Terry :) Since I posted this, we have had sunshine almost every day, I'm so grateful for that. January and February are tough months here with the cold, snow and lack of sunshine. I"m so happy about the window garden! Pavlov is getting better very slowly...slower than I thought but at least we're seeing improvement!

  29. Hi Joyce :) Thanks! I came up with the idea of the boots when I had my pugs. I couldn't afford Mukluks so I made my own with dollar store kid mittens, velcro and I cut up some dish gloves and sewed them for grip! I've been making those since, no point paying for something I can make at home right? :) I'm not giving up on the Detroit Pizza!!! I hope yours turns out better! I have to check your blog to see if you made it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Jenn :) I think it is a hounddog thing because the other dogs stay on the floor mostly or just on the seats of the couch! :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Hi Lisa :) I had to laugh because the top cushions are basically getting flatter and flatter as the days go by! Our 80 pound husky uses the top cushion to look out the window...I've had to do emergency sewing surgery a few times on the couch where her paws rip through the fabric...definitely dog couches!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi Ruth :) Your photos made me laugh! Apollo is adorable. How can we kick them off? :) Pavlov was here last summer for 6 weeks and he had no issues at all with allergies...it's something in the house for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi TB :) I'm glad you don't have to give Poppy meds...I really can't stand it, not only are they expensive, but I'd much rather figure out what is making him itch. It seems like an impossible task though.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Harry :) Yes, Dom Deluise is a comedian and the recipes are mostly his Italian mama's recipes. We have tried maybe half a dozen and they are pretty good. Very simple and yummy. I have a Vincent Price cookbook too. Multi-talented people! :) We tried home remedies on Pavlov for a week or so to see if it would work, but the only thing that gave him relief were those nasty expensive allergy pills, sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hi Nancy :) I'm really hoping that we get an early spring this year, I'd love to start more plants soon, but as usual, I run out of window space! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hi RO :) I figured you might have the same cookbook, being a collector as I am! :) The window garden is giving me so much joy these days, I always wish the herbs would grow faster though! :) I'm planning a major cleaning of this place soon, hopefully whatever it might be that's making the pets allergic will be washed away. I can only hope!

  37. Hi TPals :) Oh ha ha...practice made me a happy cook! :) That's sweet of you to say! I added you to the "pot" for the book! I was thinking of doing an art giveaway one of these days! I have to be less stressed though, there is so much going on lately with the pets!!! I bought a special "seeding and sprouting" soil from the hardware center and it's the best soil I've ever used. Pretty much everything I've planted grows very well in it.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Stefanie :) Thanks for the well wishes. It's important to keep him from licking his toes...so far he's improving thankfully!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Magic Love Crow :) Oh that's funny...I haven't thought about Cannonball Run for ages...I just remember Dom Deluise mostly from the Mel Brooks movies and when he was on Carson. I think he's a hoot! :) Food and art and pets and plants and love...that's me! :)

  40. Shelby used to sleep on the couch luke that when she was younger. Now she can't go up there anymore because of her bad hips. I remember the back of our couxh facing the door. When I came home fron work ... every day she used to wait on top of the couch and leap right into my arms when I ipened the door....lol
Your flowers look awesome. You're lucky the cat only chewed the label and not the thyme ;)

  41. Nitty licks her feet when her allergies kick in and she gets a shot. Mostly in the Spring and Fall and she gets ear infections easily. My cats sit on the top of the chairs but the dogs aren't allowed on the furniture and they can't jump up there anyway at their age.
The cookbook looks interesting. I love Italian food and I remember Dom.
Your plants are doing really well! I cheated and bought some herbs to plant. I don't know anything about baked breaded mozzarella but it sounds tasty!
