Back In The Woods - FINALLY!!!

Marlene, Jack, Charlie

Hello Friends!!

Guess what? We are walking in the woods again!!! I have to say this is something I've missed terribly since last December! For a while there I was walking Charlie every day in the woods, back in November and December - with my snowshoes on...but once all the snow piled up, I couldn't get into the forest anymore and I've been walking them all along the dirty back roads. FINALLY the snow allowed us to enter! What peace I felt as soon as I left the road and entered the woods.

Just as I snapped this shot, a deer ran across the back trail, dang if I missed her! The dogs heard her before I did! They love being in the woods...so many scents to sniff! :)

It's still pretty cold, down to freezing each night and there are still pockets of snow all over the forest.

I was really sad to see all of the fallen trees though...we had such a harsh winter.

Our first walk in the woods was a long one as I kept the three leashes in one hand and tried to move branches, limbs and logs out of the way with the other! I tried to only move what stopped us from getting through because I treat these woods like they are my own - if the path looks blocked, then maybe (hopefully!) nobody else will walk here!! :)

Look at my little pumpkin seedlings pushing out of their seed pods!!! I love to watch them grow! I hope that in a few weeks, the weather will permit me to transplant them into the pumpkin patch!

Cold and rainy days call for comfort food in this home! Four cheese pizza (Mozz, Parm, Cheddar, Ricotta).

And Breakfast Tacos with my Homemade Salsa. These are just so good! I make mine with egg white and Alex likes his with the raw yolks on top.

  1. We do the same thing on our property, keep fallen trees across some of our trail to keep four wheelers off our land. We had so many fallen trees this winter too, and we still have areas of snow, your photo looks so much like our land, it was such a harsh winter here in Ontario . I know that you and the dogs must be so happy to back on your walks, your pizza looks so good, and your coming challenge already has me planning!

  3. Your food always makes me want to eat! Oh my gosh I bet you are an amazing cook. Bet the dogs are loving the forest as much as you are. I was amazed to see snow still! We hit 90 today. Isn't that so crazy?

  4. Seeing your woods photos makes me think of something...

You are very far north. There is still snow on the ground! You live out in the woods.

    Do you believe in Bigfoot?

Ok, there is my weird question for the day!

(I think it could be a real animal. A shy ape or something, maybe there are not many of them, an endangered species, so only woodsmen and hikers ever see them.)

  5. They look happy to be out! Ridiculous to see snow still, isn't it? The fallen trees are unfortunate, but are just part of the circle of life, they'll rot, add to the soil, and on and on. Hope you have a lovely long weekend! -Jenn

  6. hi rain! it's amazing that you still have snow. we are going to be in the upper 80's today and hardly going below 70 at night. my most hated weather. plus, it's humid! but, the plants are liking it. my parsley is bolting already. i hope you get pumpkins this year. i've given up trying to grow them. i could never grow as many as i need anyway! your pizza looks so yummy!

  7. Love your woods! The deer sighting had to be awesome! We put out corn and salt in the woods, and have some cameras set up that give us 15 seconds of video. You would not believe the amount of critters we see on the video! It is just a woodsy wonderland! We are amazed that there are 7 Doe deer that stay together and 2 buck deer that stay together. We have seen everything from chipmunks to coyote's... but only on camera, not live. It's unbelievable that there are sooo many critters, but we never see them...lol... maybe we just have old eyes! Good for you that you spotted that deer in person! The woods make such a dramatic difference in how I feel... just magical healing properties for sure!

  9. Oh the joys of being able to see your woods again! Even I missed being able to see the woods and the dogs being walked. Your critters always bring a smile to my face. I think Jack could replace Grumpy Cat as Sad Dog. His face makes me want to just cuddle him. Charlie and Marlene make me want to grab a ball and play fetch with them for hours.

Your food, as always, looks so darn yummy. I am with Alex. If there is an egg on my taco, make it over easy so the yolk can mingle with all the other items.

  14. So glad you're able to get out and walk with the gang again. I really miss walking with my girls but they have arthritis and they don't go too far anymore. I need to continue but it's so hard after all these years of walking together.
Lately I am too tired anyway. the storms here have me not sleeping so sound and I am dragging. I think we're done for awhile now so maybe I can get some good sleep.
The Monster Love is cute. The pizza's look great except for raw egg....yuck! LOL!
I thought you weren't gardening this year. Did you decide to stay? I better 'catch up'!

  15. Hi Laurie :) We are all so happy to be in the woods again! The weather this week is looking up, I think we finally have spring. The quads...they can be very annoying!

  16. Hi Christine :) Can't wait to see your piece tomorrow! :)

  17. Hi Pam :) I'm jealous of your 90 degree weather!!! I love when it gets really hot and humid! :) It'll come though, I just have to be patient! :)

  18. Hi Sandi :) I LOVE your weird question! Actually there is a part of me that has to believe in Big Foot...if bears and gorillas exist, why can't biped hairy creatures? Though I've seen some documentaries that make me say "poo poo"...I just keep an open mind about these things. I've never seen or heard of any sightings in this part of the country though! Honestly though, if they do exist, I'd rather not encounter one! :)

  19. Hi Jenn :) I'm hoping to see the last of the snow this week. We had to wear our winter jackets again yesterday visiting the nursery...felt wierd!

  20. Hi Joyce :) I know how much you hate that warm humid weather! But I am jealous of it, I want it so bad right now after the winter we had!!! I'm definitely going to get pumpkins this year because I learned how to hand-pollinate them! I'm sure I'll have much more success that I've had the past two years!!!

  21. Hi Dino :) Oh, wow...Alex and I talked about getting a trailcam...but we are waiting until we have our own land. We're sure there are all sorts of forest critters that stop by each night around here, but you're right, you never see them unless you're lucky! We see deer only once in a while around here, but only in the woods.

  22. Thanks Debra :) The Monster Love was inspired by Boris Karloff!! :)

  23. Hi Marsha :) Jack does look pretty grumpy in that photo lol...it was really windy and he kept squinting! I used to be able to eat raw eggs on food, and in drinks...but my digestion has changed so much over the years! I need to cook everything, even most fruits!

  24. Hi Stacy :) Thank you :) The dogs are so happy to be in the woods, when we get to the edge of the trail, they slow down lol...they don't want to leave! :)

  25. Hi Nik :) Yeah, one of the most brutal winters I can remember...I'm so happy it's over. But the wind here is icy too...I hope the weather changes this week. So far, today is Wednesday, we have a sunny day and I'm out in a t-shirt! First time this year! :)

  26. Hi Baili :) Thank you :) I think I should have a good yield on the pumpkins this year! I'm not planting as much as I usually do, so I'm going to really make sure each crop gets the right treatment! I'm excited about the pumpkins! And yes, so lovely to see, feel and smell the woods again! Winter was too long this year! :)

  27. Hi Martha :) I'm so glad too...you know how tough it is waiting out the nice weather! I hope you and George can get out on your bikes soon! :) Are you going to garden this year?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hi Sam :) Oh yes...well, long story short, we tried for 3 houses, 2 in New Brunswick and 1 in Nova Scotia...two of them were run down shacks, not worth the money (we visited one of them)...and the third we got out-bid (we visited that one too)...it was long, expensive and painful to go through, so we decided to renew our lease unfortunately for another year. So yeah, I'm starting a garden this year, but much smaller than last year! Our thunderstorm season is just around the corner...it always thunders at night!! I hope you get some rest! Nice to hear from you!! :) xx

  33. Thanks Jenn :) Walking has been a challenge, even now. The snow is almost melted, but some areas of the woods are just so swampy!
