Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Glow. I thought I'd do my take on the 1982 horror film poster Poltergeist. The glow of the television set is pulling Bugs Bunny into the ghostly abyss! Did anyone see that movie? At the time it was pretty scary, though now I find it kind of goofy, like a lot of those 80's horror films!

I challenged myself this week to do a negative image drawing. I was helping Alex with a photo shoot a few years ago and I really liked the glow of the light hitting the side of my face in the photo; so I tried to draw that minimally with white charcoal on black paper. I like how it turned out!
Besides the art classes and house hunting, I've been busy in the kitchen! I am obsessed with a You Tube channel I found the other day called Buon-A-Petitti. The channel is hosted by an 85-year old Italian lady who cooks authentic Italian dishes. The videos are so down to earth and last night I made her pizzas with her pizza sauce. Mamma Mia! These were some of the best pizzas I've ever made!!!
It's been a lovely winter week here in the mountains! The weather is just around freezing, which makes it very tolerable. Here's a photo of the river where I walk the dogs each day - it's so beautiful!

ReplyDeleteYour take on glow first made me think about my days of youth sitting in front of the glow of the television set at night. Then, I noticed that you did a spin off of Poltergeist with Bugs which broke me up. :D
Your charcoal likeness is amazing! You did a great job drawing yourself. My hat is off to you. Wait a minute, I'm not wearing a hat but you are. Go ahead, tip your hat for me. :)
Oh yum, that pizza looks fabulous! I guess if I lived out in the middle of nowhere like you that I'd have to find creative foods to make in the kitchen. Your dishes always looks so delicious and I know Alex loves everything you make. Can you email me a slice of pizza?
Your snowy landscape is gorgeous but I'm happy admiring it from afar. I really don't want the fluff here. The cold is bad but if we had that kind of snow it would shut the city down for weeks or at least on our street as the road crew wouldn't make it to ours to clear it off. Secondary roads rarely get help. In the words of a city sup, 'You'll have to wait for Mother Nature to do the work'. Okay thank you city of Knoxville!
A black squirrel? I've not seen one. We have grayish brown squirrels in our area and of course, I know about red squirrels and we've seen white squirrel in western North Carolina but never black ones. Oh wait, should I say African-Canadian squirrel? Ha! According to Wiki the black squirrel population is small and they are more commonly found in the Midwest and northeastern US, Canada, and the UK. I guess this is why I've never seen them.

ReplyDeleteI do remember the movie ... I am surprised you are old enough to remember. In your pictures you look soooo young and beautiful. Your negative image of yourself ... Oh my, I thought it was a photo of you. How talented you are. I mean I have always known you were talented, but you keep outdoing yourself! And, I still can't get over how much energy your put into life ... all that you do. There should be some form of special recognition in your honor.

ReplyDeleteWhen I first opened up this post and saw the Bugs Bunny picture and the theme, I laughed - thinking how perfect was your picture. And then I saw the charcoal drawing of yourself, and I gasped! It's so beautiful, Rain. Firstly, you're a very pretty subject, so it's beautiful in that regard. But you've so perfectly drawn the positive spaces on that piece of black paper. It's just stunning.

Our house is still bug invested ... crazyness I tell ya. I am the only one in a household of 7 people that is not sick as a dog. I am running marathons ...but I am feeling good so I am very grateful for that. " enjoy" shopping day ;)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great image of yourself, both in the original photo and especially your charcoal rendering, Rain. I also didn't know about white charcoal but what a great effect! Thanks so much for the info on the YouTube channel. I watched a bit of one that I clicked on after reading this post. I will be watching several more and that pizza is amazing. Now, I want to make it this weekend because it's one of our favorite homemade meals, maybe not the healthiest but so good with a glass of red wine or beer! And that snowy view that you walk the dogs in is just beautiful but sadly we currently have no snow here in Nashua, NH. Can you send me a bit?

ReplyDeleteHi Rain, at last I am here.. didn't think i'd get here today little Freya has been very #NEEDY.. haa haa. Your take on Poltergeist Bugsy Bunny looks so absorbed I agree it was a scary movie in its day.
ReplyDeleteLove working with black and white in my youth it took many year before I could to introduce any colour to my drawings and portraits, I still prefer pencil and ink work to anything but keep that just for me now. Your self portrait is a fine piece and would make a great wall print.
Another fabulous view of the mountain scene around, not sure my little girl would like the cold on her puppy paws though.

ReplyDeleteYour squirrels are black?? I don't think I have ever seen a black one, just gray or brown. I grew up in Michigan. I would have thought our squirrels up there would be similar to yours. I mean, we were on the border, but with Ontario (Sarnia) not Quebec, but still. I think I am overthinking this, ๐

What fun pieces you shared, and Love your theme of glow! Life actually emits light - Biophotons (from the Greek - ฮฒฮฏฮฟฯ meaning "life" and ฯแฟถฯ meaning "light") are photons of light in the ultraviolet and low visible light range that are produced by a biological system.

Honestly Cathy, we ate that pizza THREE dinners in a row...even if I had time to post something tomorrow, it would all be that pizza ha ha! The black squirrels are rare to see around here. We mostly see gray and little red/brown critters, but once in a while the black ones show up and it's such a treat!

ReplyDeleteThanks Dino :) Our little squirrels were red/brown! We often see one of them around, Spunky, he was the more independent of the three. When we call his name he just sits and looks at us! It's so cute, I'm going to miss that little fella when we move, I kind of wish we could bring him with us!! :)

I agree, and so far I've seen that she works with 5 pounds of flour in most of her recipes. I'm learning all of this, as it's pretty new to me, and honestly sometimes hard to figure out. I'm always so tempted to add more charcoal, paint, ink...it was hard for me to stop and just add minimal medium! It's such a learning process! I'm so glad to share Gina's food channel, she's wonderful to watch, a little hard to understand, but her food is amazing as I can attest to personally now! :))

I sent them to our agent in New Brunswick and I have to wait on him to get all of the information. I haven't found much in Nova Scotia yet though. But things start to really pop up in March...I found a PERFECT place...here's the link ( https://www.realtor.ca/real-estate/21191146/-shinnickburn-road-cains-river ), but it doesn't have electricity! So the bank won't finance it...ugh! If you have time, I think you'll love watching that Italian grandma cook, she's amazing! I hope you and the family are through with the sickies!!!

ReplyDeleteThanks Dorothy :)) I will send you ALL of my snow lol! Actually it's not really the snow that bothers me, it's the cold. I can't handle it most days, but I force myself out when walking the dogs, and we all get used to it! It starts to become very exhilarating to be out in the woods when it's cold and snowy, then I get used to the warmth at home and don't want to go out again lol...same thing each day! Let me know if you make her pizza!!! Ours turned out amazing, I had mine with a bit of "Moozarell" and Alex had his authentic style like Gina likes!! :) For me it's red wine with pizza every time!! :)

ReplyDeleteThanks Tracey :))) I think that little Freya may need boots for this weather...even our husky Charlie - who was basically bred for snowy cold conditions, needs boots once in a while. I've noticed that when the dogs are out in the yard and their feet get too cold, they lie down for a while to give them a break. That was interesting to see! But I still try to help them out in the cold with sweaters and booties! I did the opposite of you, I started with colour now I just love black and white! I'm so glad you joined in this week, I'll be dropping by soon, I'm so late this week, sorry about that!!! :)

I'm an over-adder when it comes to medium lol...I think you'll love Gina's channel, she's really fun to watch and her recipes aren't very hard...you just have to scale them down because she makes food for an army!

ReplyDeleteI think you're right Stefanie! They love pine nuts. When we had the little squirrels at home, we picked up a bunch of pine cones from the woods and the squirrels picked out the nuts and loved them! :)
