Thursday Art Date: Snow Creatures and Paint Party Friday!


Hello Friends! 😊

Welcome to Thursday's Art Date, today our theme is Snow Creatures. Do you remember the Looney Tunes Abominable Snowman named Hugo? I loved that episode!


Hugo wasn't the sharpest icicle on the mountain, and mistook poor Daffy as a rabbit. He was a big goofy snow creature! This character was based on Lennie from "Of Mice and Men".


My art classes continue to be fun and sometimes challenging! I drew a few snow creatures with charcoals this week. The first was a Lynx. I like how it looks, but I just couldn't get the eyes right! And I'm sure many of you artists out there can relate...sometimes a little lack of confidence won't allow you to "push the envelope" so to speak. I think I could have worked a little more blending on the eyes, but I was so afraid of ruining it. I have to step out of that comfort zone!

A note to my friend Laurie who has lost her vision: The eyes kind of look like those old fashioned hypnosis spiral things lol...not enough dark value I'm guessing!


My caribou however, I'm very happy with! This was done in charcoals as well and I'm super proud of it! I'm really happy how I was able to show the texture of his coat.


I got a bunch of new art supplies, including some toned drawing paper, it's so much fun! I have to say, I never thought my life would turn in this artistic direction...is this was middle age is all about? Discovering your true creative self? 😊

I'm currently taking a weekly live art lesson on Wednesday nights. It's fun and relaxing and I get a chance to ask the instructor questions live. We're on week three right now, drawing a rhinoceros for this lesson series; this is definitely NOT a snow creature though! I'm finding the detail work to be very meditative.


OH CHEESE! Yesterday we opened up my Colby and Camembert - SUCCESS with an astoundingly capital S!!! 😋😋😋😋 The Colby was mild and creamy and the Camembert was very firm, just as I hoped it would be! I normally make the French version of Cams, runny and stinky...but this one is much milder and look at the firm cheese inside that bloomy white mould!!! I'm so happy about these two!     That is indeed a very fine caribou! And your rhinoceros is shaping up to be a beautiful portrait! But alas, your lynx DOES look like it got into some "edibles," if you know what I mean. LOL! So glad you're having fun with art and learning new things -- it's great, isn't it!

    I am completely blown away by your art, and loved your aside to Laurie. If she is reading the comments you are being too hard on yourself. Eyes are v tricky.
    You are right about the caribou though - it is amazing.
    The rhino shows a heap of promise too. I hope we can see more of it as you progress.

    It's funny but I don't know him but your picture is great too!
    the lynx itself is wonderfully drawn only this hypnosis spiral as you say are funny so fun. But it's true it's not easy to paint them with your eyes. So the practice keeps it up and running and trusting yourself more.
    Oh yes your caribou is so beautiful with the fur and the background to it as fascinating as you deal with the coal but the lynx is just as good.
    *Wow* the rhinoceros will be great !!! Discovering your true creative self? Yes it is!

    hi Rain, you have arr he right to br proud of the caribou, It is really good, almost like the real animal. :)

    I have some reindeer, but I think they are the same species :)

    I remember well George the snow creature from the Looney Tunes kiddie show from my youth. I think your Lynx looks great. Eyes are difficult to draw human or not. You did do a fab job on the caribou. I really like it! I really need to do some charcoal drawings. I love how yours look and what's this toned paper? How cool this is to show such textures. Your rhino is going to be fantastic!

    The Caribou is wonderful. Looks so real. The big kitty is has quite a bit of depth to it. I didn't notice the eye issue until you pointed it out. I well remember Hugo. He was such a doofus but lovable. Your cheeses look great. So glad they both turned out for you.

    I love your drawings of that cartoon character and the animals. Have you dabbled in oil or acrylic, too? When I lived in New York City, I enjoyed camembert cheese with a gin and tonic. Now that I live in Hawaii, I don't. People in Hawaii aren't into that. Totally different culture.

    Thanks for the art class updates, Rain. I too liked the texture on the caribou and also the rhino with that textured paper bringing out some really nice effects. The cheese looked wonderful, as always.

    Lovely job with the Lynx and Cariboo - I've seen both in the wild! We had Lynx who visited the rural retreat center where I lived in the early 90s, and several times I saw one trotting through camp.

    Then in the mid 90s, I spent a couple of months washing dishes in a fishing camp in Alaska, and one day a cariboo dashed across the Nishagak river! At the end of July, the boss' son took several of us fishing, and we saw a herd. Jeremy wouldn't put his line in the water till I caught something! (a Greyling) as I'd been 'stuck in camp' all summer!

    Thanks Gigi :) Yes! I actually started off with oils in 2013. I followed a LOT of Bob Ross' videos and learned his technique. Then I went to acrylics and tried my own style. I really enjoyed it. I then started watercolour, honestly it was mainly because it was cheaper for me, but I really found my style with that medium. I haven't done much oil or acrylic lately, but I'm going to take some classes with those paints to freshen up! I love gin, it's got such a fantastic flavour! I usually have it with some kind of sweet soda, mango and watermelon, so good in the summer! :)

    Thanks so much Linda! :) I think my cheeses are an art form in themselves. I really want to make more! We already finished those cheeses I posted about lol! Three days later...too fast! :) I'm really enjoying the charcoals, I have plans to do many more! They are teaching me a lot about patience and detail!

    Thanks Nadya :)) I have only seen ONE Lynx in the wild. It took me by surprise actually and then it ran away. They are so beautiful. I've never seen caribou!! Oh I haven't gone fishing in a little while, but I do remember a few summer's ago seeing a deer swimming across the lake! We are so lucky to experience wildlife aren't we? :)

    Thanks Martha :) I will NEVER tire of the Looney Tunes...well, the ones from the 30's are a little boring and the ones after the 50's start to get a little too modern for me. We have all of them on the hard drive and watch them occasionally on Saturday mornings in bed! :) I'm really loving the art classes, I'm so glad I dove right in!!

    I love your cartoon characters you draw - you do them so well! Great job on the lynx and the caribou - i agree - eyes can be tricky. I really love that Caribou drawing - . You make me want to go back and watch cartoons. My favorites were always tom and jerry and the roadrunner, and the Jetsons had a special place in my heart. I wanted to live in their world.

    Thanks Sandy :)) I loved the Jetsons too! But Bugs is my hero. :) The roadrunner was great, poor Wile E. Coyote...but I loved his spirit, he never gave up! :) Eyes can be very tricky and I'm going to be doing some studies on that this week. Part of my drawing class focuses on eyes, then ears and noses.

    Well, at last, I have found a moment ... actually I have made a moment as I am still up to my ears in things that need to be done around here. I do remember the abominable snowman and this little clip makes me think of how some animals (especially rescued animals) must feel when people try to express their love for them in a way only humans could enjoy. Your Lynx is adorable, though you may think him imperfect. I like him just as he is ... definitely cute :) The caribou, on the other hand, is perfect. I am amazed at how quickly you adapted to the nuances of drawing with charcoal ... I somehow can't do it without smudging my paper all over. I do hope we will see the finished Rhino ... he is destined to be fabulous. And, I can't even comment on your cheese. Anyone who can make their own cheese and have it turn out so delicious is out of my league. I have reached the point in my life where the microwave is my friend. You put me to shame, Rain, though I know that is not at all what you intend. Looking forward to next week. I am already way behind so, fingers crossed, I will come up with some jagged and ice. Have a great week :)

    I watched your camembert and colby video yesterday. I got all excited about my pregnant cow ,while I was watching it. I just posted about her if u wanna go and check her out ;)

    Thanks Andrea :) I'm glad you like the Lynx, I do too, I just had a lot of difficulty with the eyes! I really love the charcoal, in fact it's my favourite medium now! I switch a lot lol! Watercolour was it for the longest time! I have a microwave too! You guys only see the best of my cooking but trust me, I have my days lol! ;) I hope you make it to the art date next week Andrea, but if you don't I completely understand why! I hope you have some time to relax a little!!!

    I was impressed with the hair on your caribou, Rain, and then I saw the rhino. The texture on its face is so real I can feel it with my fingers! I love the art you share. Keep enjoying it!
