Thursday Art Date: Beach


Hello Friends!!

Welcome to Thursday's art date! Our art theme today is beach. As I type this, I'm still hoping for hot enough weather to actually jump into the lake! But I've noticed the climate is shifting, at least here in the Laurentians. Our hottest months seem to be August and September now, so my beach days will have to wait! :)

Lucky Bugs Bunny to be lounging on a hot sandy beach - coconut cocktail and all! :)


We did have a few hot days in the last week and I did my favourite thing...painting on the porch! I started off with a watercolour sea turtle. This was surprisingly very difficult for me. I thought it would be a snap (pardon the pun!). This one started off with lots of colours, but it all became a sludge so I stuck to blues and greens.


Here is my oil painting of "Sunset on the Beach". I really enjoy the oil painting. I'm so glad I'm able to paint on my watercolour paper instead of having to always buy expensive canvas.



And I love this one! It's an acrylic that took me many hours to do! This is my idea of Jack shaking water off himself after a dip in the lake! 

I'm no Iris Scott...but her work really inspired me to try doing this. She's awesome and does most of her painting with her fingers! I read a quote that she got tired of cleaning her brushes, so decided to paint her oils with her fingers. I love that! :) Maybe I'll try an oil paint with my fingers one of these days!

Where do you suppose I am supposed to sit and relax??? I don't have the heart to ever kick any of the pets off the furniture! There were some really humid days lately and the cats are just trying to survive without melting like we are!


Two of the three squirrels, nibbling away! They are all still doing well, growing up fast and eating a lot! Their diet now consists of water, mother's milk, peanuts, bird seed, carrots, sweet potatoes, nectarines and tree bark. They still feed from the baby bottle now and then, so they're not quite ready to be released yet!


Alex picked a Lupine flower for me the other day. I love when he does that! We had a wine tasting before dinner and I just love this shot so I wanted to share it! :) Rosé has to be my favourite in warmer weather. Do you drink wine? What's your favourite? I'd love to be sitting on a beach with a cold tall glass of Rosé right now! (I guess the porch will have to do if ever the cats make room for me!)


More summer eating! Fish Burgers (with my homemade American Cheese!!!) and Coleslaw with Old Bay Seasoning. Yum!


I had some nectarines that needed to be eaten so I decided to make a Nectarine Upside Down Cake. I found it a little dense, but Alex loved it. :)

    Goodness.....your art is great. Bugs always makes me smile. The sea turtle looks like I am looking through a glass bottom boat. That sunset is stunning. Love it. And the dog shaking is spot on. Thank you so much for sharing you art again. Nectarine upside down cake sounds super yummy.

    I always enjoy seeing your art, the turtle looks to be swimming in a shallow warm ocean current.
    It has been cool and rainy here for what feels like weeks! Hoping for some warmer but not TOO warm temps soon!!

    Bugs is chillaxin' on the beach wearing a big floppy hat to keep the sun off his face while sipping on a cool beverage. You and I were on the same wavelength with two of your paintings. I can't wait for you to see my illustrations today. :) I like your painting of the doggies shaking off. The first thing I thought of when I read that Iris uses her fingers to paint is Kseniya Simonova the sand artist featured on America's Got Talent back over the winter. If you haven't seen her work, then check this YT video out; artwork begins around 1:55 mark. She's quite amazing!

    Those kitties look so lazy! lol Oh, those little red squirrels are so darlin'. It's going to be hard to say goodbye to them. Mmm, the nectarine upside down cake looks yummy. Nectarines are good but I like peaches better. Your food dishes always make me sooo hungry! I guess it's time to make some breakfast before I begin eating my monitor. :)

    Rain your work is beautiful , and you have been busy, and I hear you about the cost of painting supplies, my desire to paint has always been a strong calling, too strong and I have been known to paint on all manner of surfaces and objects lol, one of my very best works was painted in oils on a cereal box piece of cardboard, it still looks great today, 25 years gone by! I have never and will never have the money to keep myself in all the supplies I could use, I’ve just made do, if there’s a will there’s a way! Your critters are doing wonderful and I thought we were the only ones that would sit somewhere else just so we don’t disturb our furry family members lol,, thank you for hosting again, your cooking always makes me hungry!

    Even though I am not an artist with a brush and prefer to use a camera, I admire and appreciate the talents of artists, like yourself. Painting with your fingers is something children seem to know, but adults then lose sight of the benefits, like no cleaning brushes as you said..and also more creative freedom, so GO for it, Rain. The triplets are growing fast, as young ines do...food looks great. We prefer pinot grigio wine in summer and I also like Rose.

    haha...you have cat cushions! just not the kind you can sit on. your garden looks wonderful, peaceful and calm. i don't get why some things don't grow, i guess it's just not the right place for them. i can never get zucchini to grow while everyone else seems to have too many. i'm glad you are getting some of your favorite weather. we are in a heat and humidity wave and the pups and i are not happy.

    Love that sunset! Holy Tomatoes, Rain! You are going to have an awesome crop! My pumpkins are about the size of yours, but this heat is sure slowing them down! We are shoulder height on the corn, and it's tasseled. The sugar snaps are done and the beans are getting planted this weekend! Busy time for sure!

    Oh Rain! I love love love your paintings. The turtle looks like it's underwater and the sunset is lovely. And Jack! Oh WoW! What a fun picture. You painted that just great. Jack's face in the picture is so playful, and the flinging "water" is terrific. You nailed it!

    Thanks Jenn :) I know, our summer has really sucked so far, but at least here in the Laurentians it's finally arrived! Hot and humid! I love that, I know most people don't but the winters are so dang long, I look forward to melting in the heat! I hope you have some warm weather soon!

I love Bugs' floppy hat, I still want to get one for my hat collection! :) Oh my gawd Cathy, I totally cried my eyes out watching that video! What a wonderful talent! Gosh she is good, thanks for sharing! It's very inspiring!! Wow...

    Oh I love peaches better too, but they are nowhere to be found in this area right now! Hope you have a nice weekend! :)

    Thanks Laurie :) Oh yes...painting supplies. If I had unlimited funds, I would have way too many! I love all mediums! That's why I stuck with watercolours for the most part, they stretch a lot longer! And you're right, we can just make do! It's still a lot of fun and very creative! I love that you painted on a cereal box!! :) Oh ha ha...I think most pet owners don't want to disturb their pets at the expense of their own comfort lol! :)

    Thank you Beatrice for your encouraging comment!!! I WILL go for it! Finger painting sounds like a lot of fun, and it's so true that we lose a lot as we grow up. The only white wine I can drink without getting heartburn is chardonnay. Apparently it's a grape that is less acidic than the other whites. The chardonnays from the warmer areas like California and Australia are the best because the grapes are in the sun longer so they lose even moer acidity. That's what I've been told! :)

    Thanks Baili :) Oh that's cool, yes, Bugs definitely has a naughty look about him! :) So you had experience trying to draw the turtles too? Why are they so tough? They just seem so easy! :) I think the summer has finally arrived as I type this. We have had some nice warm and sunny days though I don't think the lake is quite the right temperature to jump in!

    Thanks Dino :) Holy tomatoes! Yes!!! I'm so happy they are all doing so well, but then, last year they were doing well also, then turned all spotty and black so we shall see! Oh I'm so envious of your corn growing...I would love to grow corn one of these days! Let's hope the pumpkins start to grow again! :)

    Thanks Becki :) The oil painting looks a lot more pinkish in person, but the photo showed it well, that was fun to do. Yeah, the shaking Jack acrylic was also fun, I'm going to try to do it again over time and see how I can improve on that technique! The squirrels keep growing and they are having a great time in their new luxury cage! It'll be time to release them in a few weeks!!

    CRAP...missed it again! Just going to have to post me a note on the front door so I will read it each time I go out and then MAYBE, just MAYBE I will remember. LOVE the oil and totally love the one with the dog (Jack) shaking off. So cute. Really awesome job. You have improved so much the last yr with the paintings. And the squirrels..they are growing so fast. They will be ready to leave soon. Great job.

    I love your garden , love all the art and love vino :) my favourite is red ... shiraz or merlot. I have tonsay tho that I prefer the reds in the winter. In the summertime I love rose as well or white wine spritzer. I have to admit thonthat in the summer I prefer a cold beer to wine most of the time :)

    Thanks Sis :) I used to love beer in the summer, especially the brown ones like Newcastle...but I've really stopped enjoying it, I like the wines much better! I LOVE red wine in the winter too :) But yeah, summer is for lighter and fruitier! :)
